Trying to find campgrounds not near railroad tracks. Not concerned with the noise, it's the hazardous chemical explosions that I'd like to avoid.
Food factories, cattle lots, fertilizer factories, and oil refineries also not good neighbors.
Try to camp in the forest and then you got the arsonists running wild.

And if you are near Urban you have home invaders and crime. And if you are near an ocean you could have a hurricane.

Better stay home with your head wrapped in pillows...

But if you are serious, campendium (and all the other tools) show where the surrounding businesses and RR tracks are.

I hear Compendium is hiring psychics to predict the chem spills and nuclear disasters so you'll have a better chance of avoiding them.

No, I'm not serious. I was actually looking at North Platte on maps and saw Lincoln Hwy RV Park right there next to the crap. Sure glad I'm not that guy, trying to break camp and get out of there.
I'm a gambler by nature, and my odds of being just fine are very good. I also have faith, so am not prone to worrying. Neither of those traits mean that I don't exercise caution and discernment in where/when I travel though.

We prefer a campground near the tracks. The occasional train is lots better than near the interstate. We feel we have a better chance of winning the lottery or getting hit by lightning than being in the middle of a train wreck.
Many years of risking my life daily on the Long Island Expressway for 35 years with only 14 accidents (all were people rear ending me, 11 in one year) may have jaded me after sucking all that exhaust.

Railroads, a major river, campgrounds, and the Interstate right along side each other is what we have here in Western Colorado. They're all crammed together deep down within the Rocky Mountain canyons in the quite limited space available. It's normal.

Yes, the sad truth is RV parks are often relegated to the least desirable land. Same reason mobile homes get such a bad rap for tornados. They are all in the valleys and floodplain where tornados like to travel.

I agree that every incident is now "fear porn". Still working on why it's happening right now. Do the people suddenly have a bigger appetite for terror, or do the feeders suddenly want us to consume more?

From the satellite photo it just looks like a railroad freight yard.

The Union Pacific's Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska is the largest railroad classification yard in the world.

I had not seen the news, Authorities evacuate area north of Bailey Yard in North Platte because of rail car fire

If you are a Harvest Host member, you can overnight at the Golden Spike Tower on the south side of the rail yard, and visit the museum and tower. I spent the night at the city campground in Cody Park. Nice park and rail museum but too much late night going ons for me. People walking back and forth along the road and talking all night long, probably drug dealings in the parking lots in the back. The campground was pretty much full, went from empty to full after I got there, people getting off the highway for the night, and we got hit by two the strongest thunderstorms I think I have ever seen, just after dark.

I'm a train buff and went to the Union Pacific's Bailey Yard in North Platte. Really interesting place to visit.
We stayed at a RV park next to I80 in North Platte.
