Hello,

We are Vall And Mo, a Brazilian married couple for 25 years, and we are getting ready for fulltime RVing.

We are both approaching 50 years of age, and our first camping experiences were a long time ago, before our marriage, when we tent-camped a couple of times. Then we married, our kids were born, and the need to earn a solid living, of raising kids, and etc kind of got in the way of what we really wanted to do. No regrets (kids are wonderful), but now, more than 25 years later, our elder son has just got his bachelor's degree and his first job, and our other two kids are not far behind, so we are getting ready for the next phase in our lives.

Our first experience with RVing was 2 years ago, when we toured the deserts of South California (Mojave NP - Joshua Tree NP mainly)  for 10 days on a rented motorhome; last February, we did the same thing on Germany, touring almost all of Bavaria in 20 days. We liked both RV experiences a lot, so we are planning on making that a permanent part of our lives in a few years  from now, as soon as our kids leave home and we can retire and ditch jobs/house/etc and get on the road. In fact, we liked our USA experience the best (we don't think there's a better country for the fulltime RV lifestyle), so we are planning on taking permanent residence on the USA. Vall (the husband) loves the wilderness (specially the deserts), not only for the peace and quiet and the vistas but also for astronomy: Vall loves looking at the sky thru his telescope, and there are no better skies to be found. Mo (the wife) also likes Nature but prefers the cities, so we tend to alternate between both scenarios.

Vall is a compulsive planner, so we are trying to get as much information as we can on fulltime RVing as soon as feasible, in order to make the best possible start.

So far, we have more or less decided that our best option is a to purchase a good 5th Wheel with good boondocking capacity and insulation for our wilderness stays, with a suitable diesel pickup truck; we think this will be the best cost/benefit for the space and flexibility we want. Also, we are considering joining the Escapees club and getting a domicile in Texas so we can have the lowest overall cost  considering income tax,  vehicle licensing taxes, vehicle insurance, medical insurance, etc. We will be posting our plans on the relevant forums soon.

We must also stress that we are foreigners who have been to the US only as tourists (4 times in the last 3 years), so our USA fulltiming plans necessarily involve becoming legal USA residents; We don't see this as an great difficulty, as Vall has a good prospect of getting an H1B job from an American company which has the policy of automatically sponsoring all foreign employees for  a green card. Just in case that this does not work out as planned, our retirement funds are large enough to enter USA on an investor VISA (E2, EB5 or similar), so we are also considering our options on that area.

We have been lurking in this forum a few weeks now, and it has been incredibly useful: you folks are really knowledgeable, kind and helpful, and we can see we have a lot to learn from you.

Cheers,

Welcome to the forum.

Here is a link to an article in our library you may not have seen yet:

http://www.rvforum.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=435:fulltimeprep&catid=29:fulltiming&Itemid=45

It covers most of the major points you must consider before you drive you first mile as a full timer.

Welcome.. We have had several Brazilian students stay with us as Rotary exchange students here in northern WI... If you ever get to northern WI, you may want you stop in at the Kovak Planetarium in Monico WI.. Believe it's the largest mechanican planitarium in the would.....all built by one amazing  self taught young man.....you are likely well versed in the southern hemisphere, this would be the rest of the world / universe..

Welcome to the forum but be warned, it is addictive. ;D Is rv'ing popular in South America?

Vall and Mo, welcome and it seems as though you have a wonderful adventure ahead of you. Right now, I can only dream of doing what you are planning. I have friends that are retiring soon, currently selling their house and moving to Ecuador to build a house on the beach. I am envious of them. They are taking the plunge moving to a foriegn country that they have visited very little, but they are excited. Hope you have a great adventure!

Folks, many thanks for the warm welcome!

Tom: we have already read your article on "fulltiming 101", it's very good material (we learned a lot of things from it we would have had great difficulty finding otherwise); thanks for taking the time to write it, and for recommending it to us.

WhiteEagle: thanks for the tip on the planetarium, we will be sure to visit it when we are around.

RoyM: we have no doubt RVing can be addictive  ;D We can't speak much about South America in general as we know very little of it outside of Brazil, but here RVing isn't really popular: special driver licenses are required, even small RVs are *really* expensive, and there's very little infrastructure (camping places, etc) to support the lifestile; fuel here is also very expensive (about twice the current US price).

Wgb1: we hope you can realize your dreams really soon! For us it will still take a few years yet -- minimum 3 to 4 years, more probably  6 to 8 years, depending on how things develop.

Cheers,
