We are going to take a mini trip for a few days to Brownwood State park soon.

Brownwood Texas is on Highway 67 is a little bit south of Abilene TX and IH 20. Highway 67 is a nice RV road.

I have a camp site near the water. Looks like a great place. I will come back and leave a report and a few pics when we are back.

That looks like a great place. My oldest sister got married (at 17) and her son was born there way back in 1973 or so. Dad retired from the AF at Dyess in Abilene. It's been a long time since I've been up that way.

Ed,

I liked the idea of coming back to this Geographic area (Dry-Arid) in 2019. You can have that humidity! We were in San Antonio from 2008-2019 getting that Gulf Air / Humid, right hook of humid. I am currently 90 miles from Abilene. GAFB is here which allows me to obtain TRICARE RX filled at no cost. That is a savings $$ benefit that I am thankful to have near by the house. The RX saving$ we divert directly to Dog Treats!

Brownwood TX mini trip (100 miles from here) will allows us to take out the 4 Legged Kids/ Dogs to get into nature. I desert scaped and Astro-Turf-d here at the Launch Pad/ Back yard. Archie's vegetative Spray choices are somewhat limited here at the house.

We will have to be on the lookout for Rattlesnake too with temps forecast in the 80F range. Just got to remember I am the visitor in their home.

They have huge Rattle snake Round ups near by annually in Sweet water TX and Big Spring, TX, to this date still, I think? When I was a kid they had them here at the coliseum, as I remember going to one around 12-14 years old at the same place i attended the Rodeo this past weekend.

Back in the day, 1970s, the guy inside the pen with hundreds of snakes I might add, Got on to the ground and slithering feet first into the sleeping bag full of more rattle snakes and zipping up around his neck for the crowd talking about moving slowly and they wont bother you. At the show I went to they had a cobra (Not native to these parts) and the same idiot, gave that thing a kiss. I have an aversion to up close and personal activities with any species of snake, but enjoyed the experience of being there. Funny how some things get branded into your mind for you to re-live vividly, on demand, LOL. I have had some snake spottings at work when I drilled oil wells. They loved that vibration and would seek out the rig if we set up in their area.

Bit off topic, but I am going to Real World Test my 2nd DIY AC Roll Around, install. A 8000 BTU Amazon Purchase that I Jury Rigged and have never gotten to test in Warm to semi Hot weather. I have a Plan B use for the AC if this turns out to be a NO GO idea. I did a post on that AC install here with pics.

The Weather Forecast is calling for 80-85F range, so good AC Testing weather in my simple way of thinking. My Aspect has 3 slides, so the outside temp is basically the inside temp give or take a few it seems, LOL. Class C with one 15K AC with 3 Slides should not to seeking Real Hot Camping environments for those looking to make that first purchase, there is a Tip for Ya.

I am placing the AC in the corner where the dining room table slide pops out, close to Ford E450 Window, I cut the Plastic piece with a Dremel to the shape of the Ford Window by making a trace line on construction paper and transferring it to the plastic made like the shape of the Window so it fits into that Groove fully.

The instructions state the AC is suppose to vent on a "mist exhaust" feature. The unit also has a water catch bucket and a hose to route water extracted during the making AC process to cover all the ways to catch the water in various use applications , I guess?

I plan on attaching the clear assy water hose to the port and route out the Slide gasket for good luck as well as the 5" exhaust with adapter tip for main exhaust going out the window also. Not super humid in this area, but it does get Texas HOT in the summer. I can route the water extraction drip hose out the dining slide gasket, so I think I am good with the water run off.

I got a heavy duty 12G, 50 ft extension for the Sole purpose of plugging into the spare 110 on the camp ground Power pedestal.

Took in the Rodeo this weekend, here in Small Town Texas. Got to get out and have some fun soon.

Very cool JD. My Dad set up the sound system for a rodeo in Swee****er I think just as he was retiring and transitioning from Air Force to civilian. I remember going there and remember it being dry and dusty, but fun. And I don't remember much else. We did most of our camping at Possum Kingdom. Dyess AFB had a campground there for the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation). Dad loved Possum Kingdom and the Brazos River so much, that's where he wanted his ashes scattered...in the Brazos River, just below the dam of the lake. And we did that back in 2017. Man, you are evoking a world of memories. I really need to get back out that way before I am unable to.

I'll have to find your post on the AC also. I only have two slides in my 5th wheel, but the Texas heat can tax that AC really quick, especially if you don't have any shade to help with the cooling.

Ed, I found the link to the Poor Boy AC Install.

Took a Quick trip to Brownwood Texas State Park. Park is near (southeast) of Abilene off IH 20 on back Road Highway 67. Highway 67 is a nice RV road, BTW. At the last minute we decided not to take the Jeep due to Potential Bad weather. Monday AM QBing, that was probably the more stupid move I could have made.

If we had to Ride out a Storm (Tornado), driving to the Bathrooms would be a much better way to get there. I had a both newer and older bathroom at 200 and 400 yards from Site 28, Willow Loop Respectfully. The #28 site was Back In 30/50 amp / Water only site. I had a nice view of both the walk out Fishing Pier (40 yard Run) and the lake itself. For Boaters, and Fisher people this camping area would be a real Gem. It had lots of separation between camp sites, and trees scattered near by.

I also got to test the 8000 BTU AC that I Jury Rigged back during the winter. It worked like a champ until the Torrential Rain and lightnin show as the 20 amp tripped on the pedestal. I think it was GFCI also. I just ran the cord out the Front window as I made a slight gap with Plastic piece #2. Ran great with the 12 gage 50ft cord. No heat build up on the cord. Nice and heavy duty.

Our goal was just to take the Dogs, and walk around, test the AC #2, and just look at the water. Archie, my 4 legged boy still loves to spray the trees. I Desert Landscaped the yard at the House, so he always ready to go For a Car Ride. He is getting up there in age for a Shar Pei dog. Lot’s of issues can arise with any pure bred dog, or so I hear. We have been fairly lucky. I am going to the shelter and get me a mutt next go around. Tough DNA. I see those commercials on TV and think.. Yep…Next time…. We will save one.

I will say that Brownwood State Park needs to Fire Up the Bush Wackers and get out and mow the area. I am going to give the dogs a bath outside and make sure I did not bring home any ticks on them when it dries out a bit.

Brownwood, Willow point Loop has 47 spaces for RV. All near the water and a pier to walk out fish on. Fish cleaning station near the pier, but far enough away from the loop to keep the stink away. Fish cleaning station is located nearer the newer bathrooms. The newer bathrooms had lockable, private cubes to shower in. The old bathroom, community approach had remnants of dirt dobber nests and needs a good power washing from the ceiling down IMHO.

Our 3 night trip ended at the conclusion of Night 2 due to More rain and More possible hail. It poured and the ground was pocketed with wet areas and just made the whole deal, more headache than fun.

At least I got the steaks grilled before the deluge hit night 2. Night two the light hail moved in for what seemed like eternity. It was small thank God! I just kept watching the lightnin thru the Sky Light in the shower area of my RV, waiting for the baseball size hail. Luckily the hail stayed small. We were too close to home and slogging thru the water standing on the ground walking the dogs did not sound appealing. We decided to pull the plug on the trip and head home a day early. Updated forecast day 3 called for rain all day and night.

Also, after the Lightnin the previous night I saw code PE7 and a burned probe on my surge protector, so I think the weather the previous night must have had a spike from a Lightnin bolt somewhere as the Spirits were cracking some thunder and Lightnin. I have Camping World Insurance and I think I can get it replaced. Code says call tech support. My eyes tell me to replace it.

I will return as the park is only 100 miles from our place. Next time with the Jeep and document the entire area better. I will say that if I was coming to Texas and near Brownwood…I would recommend the park. State parks of Texas are a Great Value. Make sure you spend the $70 buck$ for the annual card as you will easily re-coop the $$$ spent on day fees etc.

Finally, as I was leaving, I drove up to the Dump station and gazed down at the receptacle that was under 5” of standing water. Stated the obligatory string of 4 letter words, got back in the Ford… and headed to the house, as I added a few extra for the Surge Protector which I think is fried.

Bottom Line Rating 4/5 star...I will definitely Go Back.

JD

Great report. Thanks. Oh, picture 8/9...too funny. My wife was born in Council Bluffs. In Iowa. But hey...I got her here as quick as I could!

JD, good story! I've been to a flooded dump station more than once and spoken some choice words myself :)

My dad had a Winnebago Class A and kept having the grey water holding tank break. He had his own dump station at home so he would drive with the tanks full until he got home. After the factory replaced the grey tank 3 times in 50K miles they told him driving with them full was causing them to break. I know the plastic tanks are likely better quality now but I still hate to drive with the grey or black tank full. I know the people who tailgate me appreciate it too :)
