Early in the morning

Just got a call from the hospital Outpatient surgical center. I have to be there at 7:45 to have cataracts removed from my 1st eye. The 2nd one will be about 1 1/2 weeks from now. I’m glad it’s early. They said it will take about 15 minutes for the procedure. I think I should be back home by 9:30. Looks like my life may have a huge change starting tomorrow

You will do fine. Cataract surgery has a very very low incidence of complications.

You should see a big improvement in your vision.

Congrats Rene. I am anxious to hear how it went for you. I have a very mild cataract condition in my right eye that I have been ignoring for the last few years. It is not getting any worse but it is annoying. My right eye makes things appear about 10% to 20% larger than in my good left eye. Kinda spooky when I look at something with my right eye and then look at it with my left eye things in my right eye appear wavy compared to the left eye. I admit I am chicken. Not very anxious to have a laser work on my eye but I will have to man up and go get it done. Good luck Rene.

You may have to wear glasses for reading -- DW had cataract surgery and now she can drive at night, see well at most distances but has to wear reading glasses for close up stuff.

It is definitely up there on the “best thing ever” list. I wore contacts for almost 50 years, the last 20 or so I needed reading glasses too. Afterwards no contacts but I still use readers. Lovely.

I realize that. This eye clinic has three levels of eye surgery. The first level and the cheapest you are almost guaranteed you’ll need to wear glasses either for close up reading or for long distance.
The next level you have a better chance of not having to wear glasses but the odds aren’t real good.
The third level and the most expensive, when the Doc is doing his thing in my eye, he’ll be taking some form of readings and can make adjustment to my eye and the odds are that I will not have to wear glasses at all. It’s a fairly new procedure. Have to wait and see . No pun intended.

my doctor and I decided the reading glasses would work best for me. I used the mono vision contacts (one Rx for distance, one for reading) for 3-4 years, and it didn’t work the best for me. Some people have more trouble adjusting than others. Best of luck.

My dad had that done about 5-6 years ago. It's on his list of "best things I ever did".

It was the second best thing for me. Two hip joint replacements beat it out.

I had mine done a few years ago. I wear cheap reading glasses for up close stuff. A pair of $3 in every room. I am typing this without glasses sitting at a bar.

It is ably 15 minutes for the actual procedure but it was an hour of prep while they numbed the eye muscles and applied antibiotics. You really don’t want to move your eye while they are replacing the lenses.

I cannot imagine how that would work, though.
The other options are to have both lenses for either distance of reading. I don't mind needing glasses for reading and such. I would choose to see and drive without needing specs.
The Mrs chose to read without them.
I seem to need glasses for everything, now, and since I don't have cataracts, I don't have much choice.

I went through the procedure and I don’t remember anything. It was a piece of cake. Now have to wait a 1 1/2 week to get the second eye done. When I look through this eye even being blurry because of eye cream the colors appear to be alot brighter then my other eye.

It's called mono vision.
I had it that way after Lasik surgery. It worked great until I had a detached retina in the Lasik eye.I've gotten used to the fun house mirror affect in the eye (5 yrs) that had the detachment and I only use glasses for reading
I also had a small cataract in the detached eye and they put in a new lens.That gave me a really clear view of the fun house affect.

I found the colors to be much more vibrant. It did take a day or so for the eye to sorta normalize.
I also found that the eye changed a little bit at a time for several months. For me, I started out with 2.5 diopter and am now 1.25.
At $3 per pair at Ocean State Job Lot, I don’t mind.

I remember when my Dad got his eyes worked on, he was amazed at how much brighter everything was. He said he had become so accustomed to the view through the cataracts that he had no idea just how bad they had been.
