My wife and i have a Grand Design 22mle travel trailer with a F150 crew cab short box doing the pulling. We would like to figure out a way to bring our kayaks with us when using our travel trailer. I’m in my 70’s in good shape, but not as strong as i used to be. Any recommendations on transporting our kayaks would be most appreciated. Both kayaks are under 11’ in length. When we are not pulling the trailer, it is not a problem, since i can just put them in the back bed of the truck.

How about purchasing a truck cap then build a roof rack over the cab and the truck cap. Then you’d have all that extra storage in the bed under the cap.

I bought a rack for my truck, like a ladder rack, and just strapped my kayak on it. You just have to position the kayak forward over the truck cab so it doesn’t interfere with the TT. I think I paid less than $200 for the rack.

Bzerull,
I have seen this problem managed three very different ways.
1- The lady that owned the coach got things made to carry the kayaks, on the roof. This then required that they be lifted to the roof. She got a little crane made up with block and tackle to lift the boat to where she could drag it to the mount and strap it down. Requires climbing to and walking on the roof.
2- A guy with a coach like mine made up mounts to put two kayaks vertically on the rear of the coach. He did now have to watch for steep ramps that might make the stern drag and low overhead clearance.
3- Another friend with a Class C got the rear window replaced with one that opened enough to feed kayaks in from behind. They (4 boats) could be positioned inside so as to not deny access to anything critical. (It wasn't easy, but it could be done.)
Hope one of these works for you.
Matt

Some good ideas. Cap would of course work. I just hate the darn things

Is it easy to remove when not in use?

I carry an 18' canoe lite this. That front bar mounts in a front hitch. If I were going to carry kayaks as short as yours are, I would just put two standard racks on the roof of the truck.
