Having been in Law Enforcment for a majority of my career. I will offer a few suggestions... you can take them or leave them. You must carry personal protection against people trying to take what's yours. Get a permit to carry, get Mace spray, get devices that help you when you get into a predicament. Get a Dog. Believe me a dog deters criminals more then you can imagine! Never let your guard down. As much as I
hate to say it. This is a sick world. There are so many creeps out there that I can't even tell you how bad it is. I don't mean to scare you, But I DO mean to scare you. If your not scared your not prepared. Don't stop in dark areas, only lighted areas. Don't tell anybody where your headed that you don't know. Keep in touch with the people who love and care about you as much as you can. Well that's my two cents. Take it or leave it. But, please, please be careful. Best wishes and enjoy your journey (safely).
You sound like a fun guy to have at a party. NOT! I’m 71 and lived in 13 states, two for countries and traveled through all 50 states. Spent quite a bit of time in Mexico. Walked around NYC, Chicago, London, Paris, Istanbul, East St Louis, St Louis. Overnighted in truck stops, rest stops, behind gas stations and at the end of dirt roads. I never felt the need for a weapon (firearm) had several dogs, none for protection.

And we used to hitchhike across this country and up in Canada without a second thought. Never had a single problem and met some incredible folks that actually fed us to boot. Ladies did the same during the hippie years without fear for the most part. By the way that topic could be a great one on its own. When is the last time you saw normal people hitchhiking at every other on ramp on the interstate or major two highway?

I think sometimes law enforcement people who see the dark side of society everyday start believing that the whole world is like that and they miss out on the sunny side that most of us live in.
Well JayArr,
More likely that we have seen that, Yes. But, that does make us more aware! I'm not sure what your trying to say. But all I said was there are some real creepy people out there as you said in some previous post about the guy wanting to travel with her. So apples to apples, oranges to oranges. We enjoy the bright side of life when we retire. But we are much more aware of what people are doing to each other. I wish more people could wear our boots for a day and then say "you don't have to worry, you'll be fine" . I could go on and on. But your statement about law enforcement people believe the whole world is like that, is way to broad of a statement! Thanks and have a good evening.

don't like guns I never have.Never owned one. Fired a couple guns at a friends ranch years ago. I didn't like that much either. But after a few trips in my RV I've realized the distances I will be traveling and as many remote places I'll be staying at I better be able to protect what's mine and hers. Especially her. A 33oz Louisville Slugger just isn't going to do the job if need be. It is my rsesponsablitly to get myself to arms training and that's what's best for me and mine. Others to make their own decisions, understood.

Oldgator73 who previously threatened me and my wife and called us names. You should of been banned for life on here! Don't really care what your opinion is! You know little about the dangers for sure. Also I AM THE LIFE OF THE PARTY! Take care.

Protect you and yours as that is all that's important.

Unfortunately as a Canadian she is not allowed to legally have a gun in the US, nor mace in Canada, not sure about her having it in the US. I have no difficulty with your comments about being careful as to her surroundings and locations, but in 40 plus years of RVing I have never had the need to use either.

Did you know you can block me and then you will not see any of my posts. I’ve done that to a few of the members on the forum.

I’m not sure how you would know I know little about the dangers.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings with my post last year. I should refrain from replying after having a few scotches. You know that inhibitions thing. Now, you have a good day.

Have you been paying attention to the real world lately? Its even unsafe to ride the subway in NYC. When seconds count, any and all law enforcement are minutes away. Of course that's a tired line for most.

For some reason the ones that have disdain towards our last line of defense for a civil society are the first ones to have armed security or will call the armed patrol forces when threatened of violated. But we do live in a different world. Short of encountering an armed individual wanting to do harm, bear spray close at hand slows up thugs.

This turning into a guns vs no guns thread. It will be shut down if we don’t keep it civil. You have a right, at least for now, to own and in some cases, carry a firearm. We also have a right not to. We accept the consequences of not owning a firearm just as you should accept the consequences of owning/carrying a firearm. I have been to NYC, San Antonio, Chicago, London, Paris, Monterey Mexico, Istanbul, Anchorage, Seattle, Portland, St Louis, East St Louis and many more. There’s a song in there somewhere. The point I’m trying to make is we aren’t afraid to go to these places and we don’t feel a need to be carrying a weapon.
As for the woman traveling to Mexico, I wouldn’t advise it. Not only would would she have to worry about criminals but the police and the military. Not worth it.

As I stated, no more or no less we live in a different world, yes a different World, which directly relates to not only traveling in an rv to remote regions but women traveling on their own in rvs. This relates to protecting ones self and being mindful of your surroundings for newcomers.

I think there are the usual people that gets triggered and become outraged when someone mentions guns as a method of protecting yourself in rvs for the sake of this discussion. People that travel alone are subject to more risk coupled with the new enviroment of allowable violence that does not reflect the times that we both traveled the world way back when. I know of a lot of people that would just hang a backpack on them and take off across Europe and Canada too staying in hostels. Not even hiking the ATrail on their own up in your area is safe anymore.

I don’t remember anyone becoming outraged because you want to carry a firearm. If your frightened of the world out there then by all means arm yourself. But just know, I do not trust you or anybody else with a firearm. That includes the police and the military. It wouldn’t bother me if the 2 Amendment was rescinded. But then again, it doesn’t affect me. Our founders were pretty smart folks but they couldn’t see far enough into the future to realize what guns would do to this country.

To the paranoid mind, a solo travel is an invitation to get robbed, mugged or worse...

As it was mentioned earlier in this thread, if the OP has not experience RVing south, it would be best for her to join a reliable caravan or at least going with an experienced, trusty fellow traveller. That's way safer for her than any gun, mace, Taser or baton could be, IMHO.

I don't think the world has changed that much. Crime is not on the rise to any great degree and the majority of people seem to live safe, comfortable lives.

Social and regular media pedal fear, it's what they use to keep someones attention. If you believe the media the whole world is on fire, with gangs of criminals roaming the streets.

It's not!

I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s. The news was mostly local. You pretty much knew and really only cared about what happened in your community. Whites did not walk through Black neighborhoods and Vice versa. The only foreigners we knew of was the Spanish family that rented a house in our neighborhood during Jai Lai season (the dad was a player). Crime existed but we didn’t really hear about it. There was 30 minutes of local news, 6-6:30 and national news, 6:30-7. Three channels, NBC, ABC, CBS. Now we have 24/7 cable news. They have to fill all that time with something. So we get it all.

LOL, I could provide you plenty of evidence of gang criminals , all supported by the very ones entrusted to protect us all that did not exist just over two years ago without consequences. But it would not be on topic and allowed. But you don't have to spend much time keeping up with the world events to know that we are now witnessing open season on businesses in particular. But personal assaults by repeat offenders has changed the way people go about their days and where they go if they are smart.
