The 51 year old VW Baja Bug I've had, and modified for the last 6 years... The 36 year old Suzuki Samurai, I bought last year... It is bone stock except for the rims, tires and paint... The Samurai will go any place the Baja will, but at a much slower pace... A 1.3 liter engine, and short suspension travel, won't allow for any speed off-road... Both fun cars in the desert, but at a different pace.... The Zuki is also my toad for the motor home...

Samurai is a great little off roader. Reliable and fuel efficient. Won't win any races but who cares with all it's other advantages.

Been watching a lot of Easter Jeep Safari Youtube videos lately. One of the guys from the Bleepin' Jeep channel has a Sammi made into a rock crawler. That little thing will climb anywhere with about 1/2 the fuss of the bigger rigs.

I had a Suzuki Samurai ragtop when I lived in Hawaii. It was the perfect vehicle there. Hit some of the sugar cane trails (light off road), pitch the surfboard in and hit the beach and when you get home pull the floor plugs and hose it out with a garden hose as all the mats were vinyl.

We also messed around with a ton of bugs in the 70's. Anyone remember a parts outfit called "Cost +10" in SoCal?

In HS we had a 59 bus we'd drive into Baja. 25HP climbing up I5 into San Diego at like 30mph - LOL...

We'd buy Corona's for a nickel a bottle until some knucklehead put a lime in it's neck and it became a $5 house beer - LOL...

Not my pic, but these guys do amazing stuff to and with these rock crawlers...

I remember those days.. 1st trip to Cabo... $3.00 a case for the little round Corona's... And $2.00 back if you returned the bottles... =$1.00 for the beer... Never had a VW Buss...But got stuck behind plenty on I5... Maybe it was you. ;)... We got most of our VW gear at Johnnie's Speed And Chrome in Buena Park, OC, Ca...

Oh, I know. I started off watching a channel run by a guy who does off-road recovery in Hurricane, UT, and I've ended up watching about 10 different channels run by people who mostly live in the Moab or Hurricane/Sand Hollow St Park area. A lot of them use big horsepower to climb the ledges, the guy with that little Sammy has really low gears in the t/case and he just walks up those climbs like a spider.

I've seen his channel too... Really cool watching him drag that old Suzuki out of the wilderness and thru that stream... Fun stuff...

If you want a sense of Matt's true nature, look at the last few minutes of these videos ... spoiler alert, he raised $100,000 in 3 weeks and got Hurricane to approve the park.

It's amazing how many people watch his videos.
I was talking to an older solo lady (roughly my age, BTW) camper when I was at Mt Laguna last winter. She has a Sprinter van and was asking about disbursed camping spots. I made a comment about a certain road being fairly soft and knowing her rig's limitations.
She said I sounded like the guy in the off-road recovery videos she watches.
I told her it was a long haul from Hurricane to San Diego and I didn't think Matt would make the trip.

I can't wait to see them give the "Nugget" and the Rokon back to Ed. Hope they don't give the old guy a heart attack.

Well the Orange Baja is gone ... We sold it, and made a few bucks... I miss it already... My Grandson is heart broken... He and his sister learned to drive in that thing...
