I do crossword puzzles to keep the brain going. I may try B12 but I am already taking too many pills for my liking - :-(

I might get a good multi-vitamin. I took one for years but somewhere along the way I stopped.

I don't think there's any doubt that vitamins can play an important role for some with a particular need, but when you look at the vitamin industry as a whole there's billions of dollars spent by folks with little or nothing to show for it.

There's a number of recent studies that have compiled data on vitamin usage over long periods of time that speak to that point.

Myself I take several vitamins for specific purposes as advised by a physician but when you walk in a vitamin store and look around, it's obvious (to me at least) that what many vitamin manufacturers do best has more to do with marketing that merit.

Vitamins, supplements are a 'waste of money' for most Americans

But not enough B12. The recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin B12 is 6 micrograms per day. Deficiency is common, especially in people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. In fact, it's thought that up to 90% of people following these diets have a deficiency ( 2 , 3 ). This is because B12 is only found naturally in animal foods.
I take a 5000 mcg of B12 in a tablet. The recommended daily allowance of vitamins are mainly a joke for the average adult.

Beef, liver, eggs, milk and other dairy products, salmon, sardines, trout and many other things provide plenty of B12, according to several web sites I came across, including this one: Vitamin B12 Foods: 12 Great Sources

Yeah - See below. In my natural diet I wasn't getting the right amounts of certain things.

@jymbee - Like everything you gotta know what you are looking for. I looked at 100mcg B12 and 50 tabs were like $10. I bought 65 Centrum Silver for $9 which has a bunch of other stuff "and" 100mcg B12. When I got sick last year my potassium and Magnesium levels were down and they shot me Magnesium IV.

@SeilerBird - My Centrum bottle says 100mcg is about 4000% of RDA. I am presuming one can't OD on B12 and I will just become supersmart - LOL...

BTW - That maths out to about 2.5mcg/day which jives with the Mayo clinic.

The RDA of vitamins is assuming you have been getting the RDA of vitamins all your life. If you are like me I have not been getting anywhere close to the RDA all my life so when my memory starts going you have a massive deficiency of B12. If you only get the RDA then you will never catch up. As far as I know the only vitamins you can overdose on are A, D and E. And the effects are not all that terrible.

But I have been taking vitamins all my adult life. I found out very early on that if I got a cold I would take 5000 mg per hour. The RDA for C is 90 mgs. I would keep taking that much until my cold was gone. I could tell when my cold was gone by watching my urine. When I had a cold my urine ran clear. When I got rid of the cold the excess would be peed away and my urine would turn back to it's normal light yellow color. I would usually only need to take 5000 mgs for a few hours and the cold was gone. I haven't had a cold in way too many years to remember.

When I was in my 20s my hair was falling out. I would take a shower and about half way through it I would have to unclog my drain because of hair that had fell out. Then at the end of shower I would unclog it again. I read that one of the main reasons for hair falling out was a lack of Inositol. There is no RDA for Inositol so I started taking a lot of it and my hair stopped falling out. I used a B complex vitamin most of my life and at 74 I still don't have to do a comb over like most men over 40 need to do.
I also had very bad allergies and I read that one of the main cause of allergies was a lack of Panotothenic Acid otherwise known as vitamin B5. So I took a 500 mg every day and that cleared up my allergies. I have been getting enough in my B complex. The first thing that tipped me off to the wonderful world of vitamins was my massive muscle cramps I was getting in my early 20s. My good friend told me to drink more milk or take calcium tablets. Well milk was out of the question so I tried calcium tabs and viola, no more cramps. Then I got a book on vitamins and minerals and found out about the other things it could do for me. I do not eat a balanced highly nutritious meals so I must take vitamins to keep my body running smoothly. I must be doing something right because I never get sick.

I have been told by a number of people when I was younger that I had horrible eating habits. Too much junk food and no vegetables and very little fruit. I would reply that I feel healthy as a horse, i have unlimited energy, I look many years younger than people would think and I hike 5 miles a day at least. So what would be the advantage of changing my diet? They always replied that I would pay for it when I got older. Well I am certainly older now and my two problems are a mild case of emphysema from smoking cigarettes and my kidneys are going out, probably due to 12 Diet Pepsi a day habit for most of my life. I have quit cigarettes and caffeine and I feel pretty damn good.

I think people that get educated about vitamins and what they are good for can take the right stuff and it works. I am not as holistic as you, but then again I am only 62. There has been a noticeable failure of my body over the last 3 years - I'm very disappointed in it - LOL...

My grandma lived into her late 80's. Every year she would go to Paris on her own. When she was like 85 she told me that when she visited her "young" doctor he said, "Now Jean. You need to give up eating that vanilla ice cream, it's not good for you." To which she replied, "Sonny boy. I am 85. If I give up vanilla ice cream I may as well give up living too!"

Bless her heart she came out of the bank one day, tripped at the top of the concrete steps and that was it. I wish I could go so quick and lucky at 88...

About 30 years ago my primary care doc was trying to get me to take batter care of my self and lose weight or whatever. He said, "How long do you want to live?" Without thinking about it I said "93." Doc said, "93 eh, then what?" I clapped my hands together loudly and said, "CEMENT TRUCK!" He cracked up, is still my doc today and still reminds me of that cement truck comment.
