Yes, but it was unlikely to help in this case. By the time they were once reported as lost, they were already stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Unlikely anybody will be looking in that area.

Some people blindly follow the GPS.

If you follow a Garmin GPS to my house in Auburn, CA, it will take you to a locked gate on a private road, around five miles away from the house. Doesn't matter how the GPS is set (faster time, shorter distance, etc). All models of Garmin, AFAIK.

I have not tried other brands of GPS there. But the navigation system in my Tesla will take me direct to my Auburn house.

I have seen videos on homing beacon devices that bounce off of Satellites. They seem to work pretty good. Any of you folks use them?

Spot and inReach have a tracking mode that does the same thing. If you go down a ditch where you cannot be seen, the tracking mode will let others know the area where it happened.

It's used quite often on solo motorcycle rides out in the middle of nowhere.

I always keep a map handy for the areas I am traveling in, and I check them before I go anywhere. I use my GPS to make sure I am following the general route I planned on the maps, and to make sure I do not go under any low bridges or roads with weight limits. However, I am also considering one of the personal GPS devices for times when I want to go for a bike ride or walk on an isolated path.

But sometimes that is where I want to go from some unfamiliar place. I don't recall the Tesla navigation system ever taking me on a wild goose chase.

But you said that it always takes you home and you might not want to go home yet! I was just pulling your leg. Just wondering, does it do map updates? The in-car gps in my VW just uses my phone's mapping software and mimics what would be on the screen but I rarely use it and prefer my Garmin.

We use Google maps location sharing. We had on time when my MIL and FIL were on a trip and we had not heard from them in 3 days, they were out enjoying themselves. We now share our location with her and each other. There are times when we travel and she will call and say I see you are in....

Yes, it does map updates. I recall the first time I used it to find a new motorcycle shop that opened that very same day here in Reno. It was already in there.

My 2022 Chevy Bolt and 2022 RV uses Android Auto. Like you, I do not use it and I keep a Garmin GPS in each.

Yeah, I know. But I think the Tesla has the best navigation system I have seen yet. And very simple to use and never took me on a wild goose chase yet. I only use it with voice commands, and it always figures out what I want. I wish my Chevy Bolt had it.

On the downside, I must pay Tesla ten bucks per months to get all its features. I will be paying Tesla ten bucks a month for the rest of my life. But we get what we pay for.

But I sure pay a lot of fees for things I rarely use, including my Tesla. I cannot even remember the last time I used my in-Reach. Had to be more than a year ago at $30.00 per month. But sure is handy when needed, and it would have saved a life in the case of those lost RVers near Silver Peak. No way will I go far from home without it.

When I was in the Big Bend of Texas many years ago, it then got a lot of use sending emails. No cell service there.
