Judy, I think you will find that most states indicate that you require a valid license in your home location in order to legally drive in that state. So, that is why I said that my Province requires an air brake rider is the RV is so equipped. In that case, if we are driving the DP is say Texas which lets say has no requirement for a Texas resident, I would still need the rider to have a valid license. I may not ever get ticketed, but I'm sure my insurance company would decline any claim on the basis that my license isn't valid. Hence the suggestion to check with their local authorities.

Ed, just for the sake of Clarity here, Texas is one of about half the states that does require special non commercial Class B license for motorhomes over 26,000 GVWR, by contrast my state of Louisiana will let anyone with a standard drivers license drive any size RV as along as it is for private non commercial use.

Yes, thanks, found what I need - an HGV licence (C) it costs around £1700 for the training, I'm on it!

Are you sure your current licence doesn't cover you? If you passed your test before a certain year it might. Ours do. See link. Category C1E I think.

You may of course be doing the test for your own sense of security and perhaps for Europe.

Jackie, people of our respective ages in the UK can drive up to 7500Kg with an additional 750Kg trailer.
As I said in an earlier post, there was confusion about a large RV being a private heavy goods but that was never clarified. I do wonder how people with the large horse boxes manage as with a couple of horses on board the weight must be pushing the limits.
Someone in our centre used to have a Trailite A class around 28ft but I don't think that was too heavy.
