URBAN MYTH, it ignores the repetitive charging required to operate this way.

Don't confuse AC grounds with DC grounds.
Just because the neutral on the AC side is grounded to the frame doesn't necessarily mean the negative output is also connected, they may be separate.
Just wire it the way it shows in the picture.
Ammonia is a chemical, nitrogen and hydrogen, it's not likely to be "absorbed" by anything the way a smell from an organic compound might. It boils at 29 below zero so it will dissipate by itself with a little help from air flow.

Compressor fridges usually don't use ammonia.
Leave the fridge open and the smell should go away, ammonia has a very low boiling point so it'll just dissipate.

That statement is just not true in this regard. If you hook your Lead Acid battery directly to your alternator it will charge as fast as the alternator can push into it. 4-6 hour? Make me laugh. When was the last time your car battery went...
The Stuart-Cassiar Hwy is a desolate 2 lane ribbon of road. For about half of the hwy there aren't even any poles on the side of the road because there is no hydro, phone or cable in that section of the province. It's beautiful but there isn't much on it.
