Thankingabout tyrying to build my own Desk Top PC

My understanding is the Chromebook does everything online, using Google Apps. Basically a web browser machine. If you ever do decide to build a machine, because space might be limited, the first thing you should look at is cases.  Find the case you want and then make sure all the components...

Would a large capacitor assist battery bank/inverter?

Don't think it would make any difference unless your appliance is drawing more than the rated output of the battery for that few milliseconds. Lead acid batteries recover fairly quickly to heavy draws.  utahclaimjumper - any time you turn on a motor or electric heater (like those used in RV...

    CRT to LED sound issue

Make sure there isn't a stereo mini jack.  Many of the new TV's don't have the RCA plug, but do have a mini stereo jack. Chances are it doesn't, but worth checking for.

    iCloud

typically happens because when the upgrade tried to install, the Helper application didn't quit and therefore did not get replaced. The easiest solution to repairing the issue is to uninstall iCloud and reinstall it from a fresh updated download.

USA Canada Alaska Wifi and cell phone

ATT is decent along the major roads.  Gets spotty when going through the mountains and hills.    Get off the beaten path and it will drop. ACS and GCI are the major carriers in Alaska.  ATT piggy-backs off of them in areas they don't have coverage.    ACS and GCI is in the process of combining...

Oil blowback through air filter - worst case scenario?

I could be wrong here, but if you removed the spark plug, you'd get oil pumping out the spark plug hole.  IF the piston has a hole or the rings are completely shot.  Plus it would be loud. Did they figure out where the oil was coming out of?  If it is only blowing out the exhaust and intake...

    This is sick

My first computer was actually very simple.  In an electronics I used a Z80 chip to build a simple calculator that used LEDs to display the result. Later on I worked at a computer store that sold primarily Apple ][s and laster Commodores with the C64 and Amiga. Memory prices went up and down. ...

    LED Lights Flickering

It is a shame that they (the maker) didn't take the extra step to simply put a capacitor in parallel with the LEDs.  Then the other issue is chances are they are only using half the sine wave.  Ending up with a pulsating DC that is 0 volts for a half cycle.  That would account for flicker and...

    MOSQUITOS!!! They're killing me

The citronella candles that are in the small buckets can be dangerous.  Do not use inside.  If you use citronella, fully enclosed vented container is safest.    I've seen the small bucket ones flare up with a 3' flame when they are near the end. After seeing that, I've switched to nothing but...

    Powerhouse PR2100 issues

Turned out the Inverter board went out in it.  After talking with the manufacturer directly, they are sending him a new unit (whole GenSet). Pretty nice, but it took a while.

    Powerhouse PR2100 issues

My brother has one of these Powerhouse PR2100PRi generators and it worked pretty good for a couple years, but all of a sudden it dropped down to 100 volts AC and the indicator lights are all out. I measured the voltage coming off the stator (all three legs) and the manual says it should be...

    Laptop screen replacement

Dell commonly uses different keyboards across what seems like the same models.    I had two dell insprion 1520's that supposedly were identical.  Turned out they had different keyboard and trackpads.  Looking closer at the models, while they were both the same Dell model-line, they had a...

    MAC Question

I'm also a hackitosh user.  Currently using a i7 at 3.5 Ghz.  16 GB of RAM and booting from a fast SSD.  From beep to desktop is about 4 seconds. Total cost of this was about $900 at the time. Same reason, even though it isn't my money, I could not justify $4000 for something I could build...

    MAC Question

If you also notice, every single one of those requires admin privileges.  They install something into the Applications folder, which means the user would have to type in a admin password to install, even if they are an admin, it will still ask for the password.  If they are not an admin on the...

    MAC Question

To date, there have only been two known viruses for Mac OS X.  Both required user interaction to make it happen. There have been Java and Flash exploits, which are cross-platform, but no virus detection in the world stopped it.  You had to update Java or Flash. Pre-OS X, yes, there were...
