I am considering buying a new or used View, the engine on both units I am looking at is a 3.0L, V6, 188HP. I am concerned about enough power to pull a small car and mountain driving since we live out west. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welcome.

What size RV? But IMO, for gasoline engines the larger in an RV the better. And even in smaller motorhomes like mine, I would not consider under 7L except for Class B.

I think my 7.3 & 7.4L are the perfect size engines for RVs under 30' or so. Much longer I would want at least 8L or perhaps diesel.

This is not an area to be frugal,,there is nothing frugal about owning an RV of any size and adding the irritation of low power up front is a mistake.. Ownership is about being happy with your purchase and it's performance/comfort parameters.. The western half of the US is no place to skimp on power as the terrain is challenging and a lot of it..>>>Dan

I replied to your question over at 1RV2, and to get more answers pertaining to that particular diesel powertrain you may want to go to the Sprinter-Source forums and ask in the Winnebago RV section, there are a lot of owners of that chassis over there who tow and drive in the mountains (including myself).

Thanks Don. 26 feet
And you want to pull a car? I would not even consider 3.0L, I would not even look at it.

Out here in the west, climbing up steep mountains is the norm, so even more torque & power is nice to have. Cannot have too much!

Either of my motorhomes can keep up with the traffic on the steepest hills in the west. That is what you should want too.

that particular diesel powertrain
Oh, I somehow didn't read the title closely and didn't realize that 3L engine was a diesel.

I assume that makes a big difference with a smaller engine, but I have no experience with diesels, so I shouldn't get involved in this discussion.

The View is diesel powered, so 3.0L is a reasonable size. A 7+ liter diesel in a 11,000 lb GVWR would be ludicrous!
That said, the Sprinter diesel chassis under the View is rated to tow 4200 lbs. As others have said, rolling that much weight on level terrain is manageable, but climbing grades of 3% or more is going to be slow-going. Not impossible, but probably frustratingly slow for some drivers. So a lot depends on your attitude.

For a motorhome, 100 lbs per horsepower is considered adequate and the Sprinter View falls in that range, Towing a 3000 lb toad (14,000 lb combined) would put it at about 75 /bs/hp, which is actually quite decent.

would not even consider 3.0L

Its a Mercedes turbo diesel. As Brian said in post #6, its quite capable of towing a toad, but a light weight toad is very desirable. Geo Metro, Smart Car, Geo Trackers, Suzuki Samurai. The Jeep TJ like Brian has works, its on the heavy side but certainly doable as he has stated. Max tow is 5000 lbs and thats way more than you really want to be hauling.
