2nd A/C Unit question.

I'm from Texas and it gets HOT.  So hot that my main 13500 BTU A/C unit cant cool down my 33" RV in the summers.  Inside the RV it can be 90 degrees when outside gets over 100 degrees.

Therefore, I would like to add a 2nd AC unit for my RV and install it in an existing 14" vent opening.  I am thinking that I want to have this 2nd unit have a separate power supply and hook up directly to the campgrounds 120V connection so that the 2nd AC unit doesnt have to go through my breaker/fuse box.

The idea would be to plug this 2nd unit directly into the campground supplied power as well as the main 30AMP power supply that provides power to the first AC unit as well as the rest of the RV.

Do you have thoughts regarding my idea?  Any suggested AC units that I should look into?

Thanks in advance!

Miff, we don't even camp in summer anymore because of the heat - though we dream of spending the summer somewhere cool like Wyoming or Colorado.

If you put in another a/c, take pictures and let us know.  That's something we've talked about doing also.

I done the same thing on a previous Fifth-wheel.  I ran a separate manual transfer box to that AC unit with a double throw switch and separate power cord ( 30 amp) I could run to the 20 amp service and dog boned my 50amp to the 30amp.  If I had 50 amp I wouldn't transfer to the other cord going to the 20 amp plug. I would just use 50amp. or I could use the 50 amp and the 30 amp if I had wanted too. Our motor home now I can usually run both AC uinits as long as I turn my inverter down and monitor what we turn on . It is running at max for a 30amp service with two acs but if you have good voltage coming in you can do it. Just cant run much else.

I will let others discuss Ducted v/s non ducted but ....

I have a 50 amp RV and when I'm on a 50 amp site (As I am now) Both A/C's run just fine as delivered but sometimes I'm stuck on a 30 so I did some "Mods"

THe result is on a 30 amp site I do exactly what you purpose to do. and it works fine .

THe one suggestion I'd make is to put a 20 amp breaker in the power line to the 2nd A/C. I( have not (yet) done that. as USUALLY the park's 20 amp I trust. but not all parks have a 20 amp. One park I stay at I have twin 30's.. I do something else there I won't discuss here but (I like those sites).

No problem at all !
Just put a single pole  20 amp breaker in a small enclosure and run a number 12/c w/gnd  to it from your new AC unit.
Include a ground lug and a separate neutral lug. Then run another number 12/c w gnd  from it with a 120 volt male plug to plug into the power pole. ( you could use a no. 12 extension cord and just cut the female end off)
