2x4 VS 4x4 lumber

I kind of don't think it was an accident, but I do believe it was "random." It was probably deliberately put on there hoping that no one would pay attention to the tag. They think they are buying a 2x4, but actually being charged for a 4x4. I bet the price on the shelf was correct? It's truly a deception and unethical practice, yet it happens way to often. The manufacturers and business owners are hoping no one notices, pay the price, and nothing ever becomes of it, except is more money in their pocket.

I learned a long, long, long time ago to check the labeled product and to do the math to figure out which item was the best for the price. Retail shops complain about customers switching price tags.... but THEY ... far to often ... do the same thing, only in reverse.

It was a good catch and now the OP should go to their facebook page and share his experience there! Don't be critical, just state the facts as done here.
The supplier doesn't get paid based on a barcode and there is zero probability someone at Home Depot conspired to remove the stapled on bar codes from the ends of each 4x4 in a bundle and replace it with a counterfeited tag. It was a simple error committed by the distributor.

I don't buy that. Wall Mart and other chain stores are notorious for attempting to trick customers into up-selling without their knowledge. Case in point? How many times have you found an item marked (say, on an end cap) for a really good price ... lets say a box of Rice Krispies for the 16 ounce size. But, on the same end cap they sneak in boxes of 12 ounce sizes, or make it so confusing with so many different tags it's difficult to determine just exactly which one is the "sale" item. Someone not watching will simply grab the most obvious, up front item and run with it thinking they got the advertised one, when in reality, the smaller box actually costs more than the larger one, that is actually the one on sale for the lower price.

I've never seen wood at a Lowe's or a Home Depot miss labled on the actual product, but I have found the shelf labeling to be horribly misleading ... unless you READ it very carefully. Case in point are true 8 foot 2x4's vs 7 foot 2x4's. Yet, they will be side, by side. Easy to grab the wrong one ... which I've done a few times until I wised up.

So no.... I don't follow the "innocent management" theory at all. It's a deliberate attempt at deception.

The OP was very, very smart in questioning the label. And he was very, very smart to check it out too, and not just arbitrarily grab the first piece of wood and run with it.

That's OK folks, no one believe me either 20 years ago when I tried to sound the alarm that big brother was monitoring everything you do via your new cell phone, new automobile or your new internet operated appliance either.

You can eliminate a lot of confusion by carrying a tape with you or just walk back to where the miter box for cutting moulding sold by the foot is and you'll find a half dozen new tapes where jackasses have gone over to the tool dept. and grabbed one off the hanger and when finished their lazy ass left it on the table. Those 92 5/8" inch studs are for framers, so the bottom plate, a stud and two top plates will create an 8' interior wall height to accomodate 4'x8' sheetrock. No one wants to be mucking around trimming 5 3/8" off each stud.

A lot of folks don’t understand lumber; treated/non treated, grades, framing, plywood decking, good on one side, furniture grade. I’m no carpenter by any means but I pretty much know what I’m looking for. The problem I have is I either purchase too much of an item or not enough.
The other day I decided to build a platform off our concrete deck for my firewood rack. Being cheap I used some wood from my wood pile and some screws that were too short. The photo below is the result. I fixed it with all new lumber and longer screws . I won’t fall through now.

I've had no problems with Lowes or HD regarding Veterans Discounts. Enter your Tel# and go. (Anyone who asks for my tel# gets the # on my alarm system. lol). I do like the Veterans parking up front at Lowes although I'm more of a HD guy.

Hmm... haven't see that at Lowes of HD. Apparently a geographical thing-- OR, they set something up to accommodate you personally! :D

As tempted as I am to use my wife's handicap sticker at times or preferred parking spaces of some kind, I tend to park at a distance to the front door, saving that privilege for when/if I get to the point where I can't walk that well.

A related topic... bugs the **** out of me to see something like a group of teenagers taking up a handicap parking space!

They only do it at Lowes. At least the Lowes here in DFW.

Handicap plates in Texas are handed out like candy. About half those using those spots do so, not because they're handicapped, but because they feel entitled not to have to park out there with the suckers and losers.

Isn’t the suckers and losers parking called veteran’s parking?
I have alot to say to you but I’ll keep my comments to myself,
I can’t believe you just said that. I am one of those suckers and losers and proud of it,

I was informed sometime in the past that both HD and Lowe’s are not there to help you with your projects. They are DIY stores and the folks that work there are not necessarily experts in the departments they work in. You’re supposed to know what you need before you get there.
Yep, nearly every employee is part-time; if I need advice I buy from my locally-owned lumber yard.

Yeah, we have some lumber advice: If you need lumber advice you don't need to be buying lumber.

So, you are up to date on all the advances in the lumber industry and know the best type of wood to use for every application out there.
Guy in break room: And then this dude asks me, before I build the addition to my house, can you update me on the latest advances in the lumber industry, is syp short for syrup, what is the molecular composition of teak, and do you guys sell hammers?
