AC Stays on

Hi All, so just tonight the AC compressor stays on (at least it sounds like the compressor) after the AC shuts off via thermostat setting, or manually.  I tripped the breaker a few times to try to stop it and it would work but only temporarily. Then after a while it would shut off, only to come back on again. Just a loud buzzing. Noise. The AC would still come back on and the cold air blows after dropping below the set temperature.

Does this sound serious? Can I fix this in the middle of a big trip? I just hope the AC does not burn out. Thanks in advance everyone.

This may be a control board problem, or possibly something as simple as a stuck relay, though I am not sure I am completely following your description.

If you have a heat pump and it stays on for like 30 seconds that may (or not) be normal.
But if it's just an A/C.. not a heat pump. generally not.
