Diane and I are going off shore for a while. I am thinking of getting a Tablet for her to download our photos. She is a Apple Christian, I PC and Android. So what will work to use on a trip where weight is a factor. We will take several cameras all have USB or memory cards. She now downloads to her macbook pro and does a quick edit every evening. So question. Can a tablet be used with a USB cord, and is one brand better for photos. She would most likely want an I-Pad which is OK but I cannot find much in the way of transferring from camera to tablet to macbook once home.
Any of you photo experts have advice for me?

I am certainly not a photo expert but if your camera uses an SD card all the Android tablets except the Nexus have a microSD slot that could be used for transferring files. I have an adapter for our IPad that accepts a USB cord but it needs power or something to read my sd card reader.

iPhones and IPads are set up to use ICloud for transfs or dealing with ITunes if you have a PC.

I'd recommend putting together a list of the methods of transferring files form all of the cameras you intend to us. .

Those that have a USB cable for transferring pictures, make sure you know if they function in MTP (media transfer protocol) or USB Storage mode often both are supported.  This is an important distinction, although I'd expect most modern devices to handle either.

For those with removable media, find out what kind.  Micro-SD seems to be getting very popular, and can be used in all cases where SD cards are used (if I recall correctly) via micro-sd to SD adapter which often comes with the micro-SD media.

Knowing what transfer methods you require will help determine what hardware best suits your needs.  If you can 'boil it down' so a single means you're life will be easier and your choice of hardware will probably be easy as well.

Hope that helps.....

My wife and I both have iPads and she downloads photos to it.  As far as I know, you cannot just plug the camera into the iPad via USB cord.  However, she purchased (I think for about $30-40) the Apple IPad camera connection kit, which allows her (I believe) to either connect her camera directly or take the SD card out of her camera and plug it in to the iPad.  The kit itself is a small device, about 1 1/2" square.

I can double check on the details when I get home from work.

This device, from Apple, can be used to transfer pictures from your camera to the iPad - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A/apple-ipad-camera-connection-kit

Once on the iPad, if you sign up for iCloud (free 5 GB), the pictures will automatically transfer to her Mac (or your PC) once both devices are connected to the Internet. If you are travelling overseas, however - you should carefully watch any cellular usage (if you get the LTE version), or just turn it off completely. The cellular companies charge you outrageous amounts for an international data plan and usage.

I am certain that things have changed for the better in the modern world, but this Luddite is using an iPad 1 (Yes, 1) and a camera connection device (aka a card reader in the non-Apple world) to transfer the pictures to the iPad 1.  Then I use iTunes to transfer the pics to my laptop or desktop, both of which are non-Apple.

I haven't entered into the iCloud realm because of our 5G monthly data limit when we are on the road.  I became concerned when I started calculating the number of times iCloud would upload and download the files to sync them with all of our devices.  Keep in mind that it is not unusual for the Pelicanlady to shoot a Gig or more photos in a day.

Hope you guys have a wonderful "out of the country" experience!

Cloud services are good, I use Dropbox myself.  But for Android and several other devices there is a program called KIES air  I have it on my Android and there is a version for PC, do not now about Mac or I=junk... However. Read on.

Now I do not run KIES on the PC.. I run it only on the android  Here is the procedure.

make sure both the phone and the PC are connected to the house router (MY router) 192.168.N.V.  (Where N is a fixed number I choose and V is a variable one set by the router when the device connects)

I execute KIES and tap the START button. It gives me a IP Address:port number

I type in the IP and port number in Firefox (or any other browser)

The phone now gives me a PIN

I enter the PIN on the on-screen requestor on the PC.
And it loads the KIES home page

Off to the left si a link "File browser"

Which I find is the easiest for ME to understand,, I now navigate to the camera folder (External, DCIM, CAMERA) and I can download the phone to the PC, or upload the PC to the phone.

Theory has it if I had the KIES application running on the PC it would "Auto disover" but .. Well. ... I don't do it that way.

I am sure there are other programs like it.

Also, if the device has upload/download capability for the files you wish to share....

A simple file server willl do it  Could but northing more than a USB drive plugged in to a router with that ability or one of your comptuers. set up to serve (Most will do it at some level simply by using the "Shared photos" directory)

thanks all,
Looks like the IPad is the choice Diane can also shoot a gig a day and we have never used the cloud for the same reason as the Don. New Zealand will most likely be too costly and we plan on staying in the back country avoiding city's for the most part. I will need to see about memory sticks or take lots of SD cards.
Well you have as usual guided me in the correct direction.
Jim

New Zealand is Diane's dream trip. I promised her the trip if I retired. Dragged my feet but now is the time and I might even get in some fly fishing. Time will tell, its her trip after all.
