Any one been to Red Rock Canyon in CA, at base of Sierra near Tehachepe (sp?) pass. Thinking about mid march? Hot there then?

We've stayed there. It was early April. I looked back at my journals and there was nothing about the weather so I'm guessing it wasn't nasty hot. However, we're ok with hot weather so it may have been in the high 80s. And tbere's no telling how hot it could be in any year. It was a pretty spot.

We have passed by several times, on our way to Mammoth and Bridgeport from LA... We stopped and took a look at the campsites. Pretty barren, small and dusty.

Weather can be VERY unpredictable in Feb/March (transitional weather period). Most days can be absolutely gorgeous..... nxt day (with little warning) can be flash-floods and 60mph winds. If you camp in that area, it's best to check the weather forecast a few times a day.

is it desert like? pretty? anything nearby to see.? barren and dusty does not sound so inviting. coming from sacto for just a getaway so did not want to drive to much further. any other desert suggestions anyone? Thanks!

Red rocks, craggy, very scenic if you're into geologic phenomena. Dusty? Hey, it's the desert.

The weather in mid-March will be cold.  Get the weather reports for Ridgecrest, CA for an idea how cold.

The surrounding country is scenic desert with lava fields and cinder cones to contrast with the red/white  sedimentary deposit of the Canyon.

Enjoy.

Agree.  Red Rock Canyon is in the Mojave Desert, but still at about 3,000 ft elevation.

Thanks everyone. Hope to be on my way in a couple weeks for a little break in the scenery.

Here's some pics that we took of the camp-sites...... These were the 2 that we thought might be the best.

Your pictures took me back.  I haven't been there since I was stationed at NAF China Lake in the mid-60's.  Maybe I can make it back out there some day.

We camped there last May and loved it. Comming from New Zealand where we were brought up on old American films and comics I was very dissapointed that Gene Autry didn't show up and Tom Mix was nowhere in sight. A great spot for a couple of days tho'.
