Ah, the ever present challenge of this evil game!

Not a "scheme" but the one thing I tend to do when presented with this kind of situation is to opt for the most "common" word, if that makes any sense. For example, took me quite awhile to come up with my 3rd guess today and I wasn't optimistic given it wasn't that common a word. But at least if limited future choices so I got it in 4.
