i like you can use a space to look at the letters you know, sometimes it helps. I usually just use a paper and pencil. Helps visualize.

Good point, but rather than pen/paper I sometimes have another window open with Wordplay.com to use as a "scratch pad" of sorts.

I think playing in "Hard mode" which can be frustrating at times, also forces you to keep making guesses based on your green tiles already uncovered.
