Haven't seen a lot of discussion here re. dash cameras and searches come up with some very old threads.

There seems to be dozens of dash cam models out there ranging in price from <$50 to >$300. Anyone have experience with a camera system they can recommend?

Also have a question about cameras with GPS functionality. That sounds like nice feature but not sure how the GPS info is utilized. Is it embedded in the video somehow or perhaps linked in a separate GPS file?

I was using a Rexing V1 front view only camera for a year. Then they came out with the Rexing V1LG that has front and rear viewing and has GPS built in. I gave the V1 to my wife and put the V1LG into my Ford F-250 just before my trip to Colorado this year. I wanted front and rear views because I wanted my wife to see the roads I was traveling with snow. Thank goodness I did...not because of the views but because of the GPS feature. I got stopped in KS by a very rude cop that said he clocked me at 90 in a 75. I just smiled at him and asked if he was sure it was me and he said he never lost eye contact with me. He then asked for my ID and insurance cards. I said no problem but I think you need to know that my dash cam has GPS and can show that I was only going 79 MPH. He got nasty and I asked for a supervisor. At that he said OK show me the footage you have. I did and he simply handed my cards back and without a word got in his car and drove off. Best $130 I spent in a long time. I highly recommend either dash cam but I will not be without a GPS functioning one again.

If you want one that will also record inside your car, you may be interested in the Vantrue N2Pro. To get GPS with this unit you will have to purchase another AP for $22. That would put the unit with GPS for around $225.

Good luck.

Now THAT's what you call a happy ending!  ;D
So the GPS information displays over the video somehow, or is just a separate display?

Thanks-- I'll take a look at these models.

You don't need to spend big bucks. Search around for one with gps and microcard capability. Mine is a Cobra 840 that has all the bells and whistles like GPS, auto on, collision save, etc. The screen is small though but so is the price.

Both units have a separate display. The V1LG is a little nicer and both have disc's that can be removed to be played on a computer or phone if phone has a slot.

There is a video I think here in these forums (KEY WORD Sidewipe) taken by a dash cam.

ANd at the low end price wise PILOT Dash cam. not all that high quality buit $17.00 at Wall-Mart automotive seciton. I now have one in my car.  Have not reviewed any videos yet but.... Instructions tad confusing  May pull the video card and slip it in to a reader later.. Too busy with other stuff now.

My DW bought me the cheap one and the picture resolution during playback is very poor. She had good intentions but knows nothing about electronics.

I've installed the blackvue cameras in my cars and sons car. It has a GPS plugin to display speed, etc when you view the videos and also has local wifi so you can grab videos right off the camera to the phone. I'm getting one for the RV too. I've heard too many stories where accidents happen and both parties start fibbing on the incident because it's never their fault. So the camera will take care of that.

I've got a Garmin, very pleased with it's capabilities. Some input on the various cams available can be found at http://www.ipcamtalk.com under the dash cam forum threads.

If you have ever been in a close one, the audio that comes with the dashcam incident is enough to embarrass a sailor.  ;D ;D ;D Dion't ask me how I know. Suffice it to say I didn't even know my wife knew those words.  ;D ;D
