Today my son (visiting from the mid-west) listed something for us on Offer Up, and almost immediately received a response asking "are you 420 friendly?". I had no idea what it meant, and learned that it was weed-related. We don't participate in that stuff, and he replied NO.

I was taken back to our arrival in CA (from the UK), when we were invited to a parental get-together discussing local drug-related stuff. We were both sitting there with our mouths wide open.

Ok, now I am curious about what on earth was being sold that brought up this response! I have seen a number of camping locations advertised as “420 friendly” or ”not 420 friendly.” There were a number of people at Quartzsite looking for camp mates that were 420 friendly too. Since I can’t stand either tobacco or cannabis smoke, I am not a good candidate for them.

That got a good chuckle out of me. It doesn't matter if I'm friendly or not, but it is legal....er....not criminalized... in a handful of states, obviously, California being one of them.

I guess 420 is uniquely American slang for weed, and you said you are from the UK, but I'm surprised you've gone through life and never had anyone ask if you'd accept weed as payment, or as something for trade.

Gas, *ss, grass...nobody rides for free. ....No? Never heard of that one? 🤣

420 supposedly became to mean related to weed/pot/whatever you want to call it, because of a bill in California (where else?) to legalize recreational use called proposition 420.
From what I’ve read, that’s not true. HOWEVER, ‘420’ has come to represent a codified way to reference it. i.e. “420 friendly”, “420 tolerant”, etc. (Pretty sure I’ve seen some user names here that had a 420 reference.. they’ve never had many posts or stayed around long.)
They’re are many references online to it every year on April 20th… much like March 14th being pi day.

One of my hobbies if hydroponics, which as you might know is also very popular with the 420 crowd, before the move towards legalization across much of the US, certain code words were often used on the hydroponic message boards, advertising hydroponic products, fertilizers, etc. The most common one was to make reference to techniques for growing "Tomatoes" as tomato nutrient blends are very similar to their plants of choice. Note if you look at the logos for many of the more expensive hydroponic fertilizer blends you will see depictions of tomato plants.

420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) is cannabis culture slang for marijuana and hashish consumption, especially smoking around the time 4:20 pm (16:20). It also refers to cannabis-oriented celebrations that take place annually on April 20 (4/20 in U.S. form).[3][4] At locations in the United States where cannabis is legal, cannabis dispensarieswill often offer discounts on their products on April 20.[5]
Which is rather odd, as that is a certain infamous German corporal's birthday also.

'Are you 420 friendly', was an offer to trade weed for the scooters. I might have tried it once or twice 40 years ago, but I never inhaled ;)
Different weed than 40 years ago. Much higher highs.

We voted "no" on legalizing it Colorado. Never been into smoking and drugs.

Our only new businesses being built between the 33 miles from Parachute to De Beque to Palisade along I-70 were marijuana dispensaries. A new Tumbleweed store just opened in Palisade right near the off ramp behind a large fuel stop. We don't even have fast food restaurants. The new dispensary was packed with travelers last week. This is the first marijuana stop entering Colorado from the west.

"Marijuana potency has increased in the past decades, up from about 4% in the 1980s to an average of 15% today. Marijuana extracts, used in dabbing and edibles, can contain an average of 50% and up to 90% THC."

I voted yes for all the legalization efforts. I really don’t care that some people enjoy marijuana. That’s freedom.

The fact that people have not heard a popular culture reference to marijuana in 5, 6, 7 decades of living….yeah, you don’t need to have smoked it, but maybe you do kind of live under a rock…….lol
