Article On Tesla Warranty/Mileage

Regarding the Google maps comment from Don.

If I put in a destination into Google maps, it will show mileage and ETA. However, often when I hit the button to start the directions, these 2 numbers very often change and are usually higher.

I think this may be what he is referring to.

This creates arguments as I tell Steve the info and then it changes and he doesn't believe it was Google 😕
This will show exactly what I am talking about, same GPS (Garmin 390 LM), same location, both accurate, but one for a bird and the other for roads.

For a bird to fly to King's Beach, CA (25 miles) from where I am now sitting.

I hit the "Go" button and now have the distance to the exact same spot in King's Beach but via roads (45 miles, as shown below):

A difference of 20 miles to the same location from where I am sitting right here.

Both are 100% accurate and both are handy at times.

In the top photo above, there will be an arrow shown if I were moving, pointing to the exact destination location regardless for what is in the way. I often find that to be very handy, such as when one of the roads are closed for construction or whatever. It tells me which direction I need to go when I cannot use a road for whatever reason. Arrow not shown when not moving, such as right now.

BTW, my better hiking GPSes will show the arrow even when not moving because they use a magnetic compass for when standing still, they do not use the satellite system until moving. But GPS units for autos assume you're in motion.

The bottom assumes every road is fine and has no locked gates. I mention that because if a GPS is used to get my Auburn house, it will take me to a locked gate on private property that is around five miles away. But it is accurate if the gate wasn't locked, and I could drive on it. It would be shorter and faster if I could drive on it. But the GPS only knows it is a road, it doesn't know it's a private road with a locked gate.

Just ask him if he's aware what the "E" in ETA stands for, you can give a hint, it's not "E" xact.

GPSes can be set to show "GPS Accuracy". Mine, right now, can be off by (up to) 27 feet. That is 100%
negligible at a distance of 25/45 miles as for Kings Beach. No way could anybody notice the difference.

It would be less than 10 feet off if I were outdoors and hit a few more satellites.

However, when the satellite system is NOT used to set the destination from that location, it can be off by many miles, especially when it is an address on a long highway. That is because when an address is used, the GPS can only use assumptions. There is no possible way for it to know. Such as if a long road goes from 100 to 200 in addressees, it will assume 150 is right in the middle, which is OFTEN incorrect.

We cannot expect a GPS to be accurate when it is not possible for it to use the satellites to find an address because of the countless different ways streets are with such. Especially inaccurate for finding an address on a very long highway with very few homes. That can be off by 20 miles or more.

However, when once getting there, set the location even if many miles off from what the GPS said to begin with. And next time use that waypoint and it will be within a few feet as then it will use the satellite system to know where it is.

Put in the coordinates for the address in advance (as I do) when possible. Then you will arrive at the exact (within a few feet) of the address.

FWIW, I wish addresses did NOT exist. Just use coordinates only for everywhere. While harder to remember and a lot more digits, it is always accurate within a few feet.

You all make me laugh.
Yes a "GPS" will give direct mileage. And then if you have the mapping will adjust to roads mileage when you git GO.
A GPS is not MapQuest, google maps, the maps in your phone, and other websites and APPs. Most all of them are designed for road system and will give you the mileage via the road system before you hit go. Sometimes they give several route options.
If it's a website or APP designed to aviation, I am sure it is different yet.
