Hello. We are new to "RVing" and, first trip, coming through the Asheville, NC area in a couple of weeks. We will be spending a few days in SW Virginia and Little Switzerland area and then wanted to check out the Biltmore estate on the way to visiting friends in Greenville, SC. We are wondering if there are any suitable campgrounds for an overnight right near the Biltmore? I've been looking on line and it seems that the ones that are close may be more of permanent resident RV parks? We've got a 25 foot motorhome pulling a utility/motorcycle trailer and can ride our motorcycles to the Biltmore.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I don't know about campgrounds right in the Ashville area, but if you have not priced the cost of admission for the Biltmore House, I suggest you check it out first. Click here for Biltmore House Prices.

And these prices are for only 1 person. If you are a couple, the prices will be double. I'm not saying don't do it, but I am suggesting you be fully aware of the cost before you are horribly shocked if you are not prepared in advance!

It's a very popular area so campsite can be hard to comeby in the summer and early fall. If nothing really close has openings, try out east around Swannanoa & Black Mountain. It's only 10-15 minutes away via I40. There's a KOA in Swannanoa that usually has sites.

I have not stayed there, but Lake Powhatan Campground and recreation area is probably the closest one you will get. It is accessed via Bent Creek Branch Rd/Wesley Branch Rd, which runs off of Brevard Rd/NC191 about 2000 ft from the Blue Ridge Pkwy interchange. Google says 14 miles via I-40 or take the BRP across to US25 and do the loop to get to the ticketing area, 15 miles.

Also visit The North Carolina Arboretum whose entrance is even closer to the BRP interchange. $16 parking fee, free to enter, some hiking trails but a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.

If you will be traveling further south on the BRP, know your MH height, as the tunnels get more frequent and lower the further south you go.

You can camp on the Blue Ridge Parkway in several places.
Julian Price Campground, is close to Blowing Rock.

Further south is Linville Falls Campground and the falls themselves, with hiking trails. The movie Last of the Mohicans was filmed at various places in NC and some of the scenes were shot at Linville Falls. There are no hookups, just a dump station and scattered water hydrants.

The Museum Of North Carolina Minerals is located at the BRP interchange with NC225 about 3 miles before Little Switzerland.

Crabtree Falls Campground is about 6 miles south of Little Switzerland and has a very nice water fall that is about a mile hike, but its a workout.

15 miles south of the Brevard highway interchange on the BRP is Mount Pisgah campground, which is my favorite at 4900 ft elevation.

This is leaf peeping time on the BRP and the whole area so expect traffic and congestion wherever you go.

Charles

Curious if this is a go....that particular area was hard hit a few days ago by the rains. we were there last summer (stayed outside of pideon forge) and will be again next year - depending on what gets rebuilt. westbound I40 is 'in the crick'

Weather Channel reports that I-40 eastbound in NC is now open.
Not all of it. Entire sections have collapsed west of Asheville. East of there, some sections have 1-2 lanes open. Some parts of I40 are expected to be at least partially closed for a year.

I would not attempt to stay anywhere near Asheville or Hendersonville for at least several more weeks.

I think leaf season is a bust for this year in the Smokies and western NC.

Google maps is showing all of I-40 both directions from Willow Springs TN to nearly Waynesville NC to be closed. It is also showing westbound I40 near Hickory NC to be closed. Many other smaller roads closed.

Just open Google Maps on your computer and select Traffic and you will see all of the closures.

If you are not helping then you are hurting, as they say. I like to go to western NC this time of the year, but it ain't gonna happen.

DH (Dear Husband) and I planned to visit the area next March/April. In your opinion is this even going to be a possibility?

I think you should be good by then. Heck, I40 gets closed at the drop of a hat anyway. I've seen lanes closed for years. They even shut down one of the tunnels for a couple of years and had a temp road around it.

Weve been to Asheville twice and stayed at Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, I hope they survived the storm. It's a nice park right on the river with a bike path going down the middle of the campground.
Our friends in Asheville lost their patio and more importantly are OK.

If something was on any river in the Ashville or Erwin area it didn't fare too well. Some places got 30" of rain. Erwin and Unicoi looked liked they had built a damn somewhere and made a lake there.

Spend the money to see the Biltmore. And rent a couple of the audio devices that describe everything in each room. You'll miss some cool stuff.

I haven’t verified this photo, but it’s supposedly shows the high water level, recent flooding, at the Biltmore. I wouldn’t be planning travel in that area for a long time. A very sad event.

The OP hasn’t been here since the first post. Hopefully all’s well. His timing may have put him in the Asheville area when the storm hit.

I know that area well. That's the Biltmore gate house and the nearby Biltmore Village was heavily flooded when the Swannanoa River and two tributary creeks went several feet over their banks. But notice the adjacent wall has no mud stains at all?
