Asheville

Hello, all!  Going to spend a few days in June 2020 checking out Asheville and Black Mountain...does anyone have any experiences with KOA West, KOA East, or "Campfire Lodgings" in the area? 

Our travel style is typically to find quieter and more private sites, but those aren't really a "thing" in the Asheville area. 

Our family/children/dogs situation calls for a 30 amp site and the predictability of a reservation, which rules out most of the national parks in the area, the old standby "boondocking" recommendation, etc. 

Any experiences with any of these three places, or another in the immediate area that was respectful and quiet, would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed at the KOA West in the fall of 2017. It was nice and quiet. We were there only in the evening to sleep. Spent the rest of the time out sightseeing. I would stay there again when in the area.

Our favorite campground by far when we're near Asheville, NC is the Lake Powhatan Recreation Area in the Pisgah National Forest. The Lakeside Loop has full hookup sites with 20/30/50 amp electric. The campground is convenient to many of the Asheville attractions, and the sites are much larger than any you'll find in the private parks.

The nicest campground in the area is Mama Gertie's in Swannanoa, with sites terraced into a mountainside.  KOA East is nearby - right on the RR tracks but gets decent reviews. Asheville Bear Creek (on the south side near I40) is congested, but if you are out sightseeing all day and returning at night to rest, it's convenient. Not a place I would enjoy spending a day on the campsite, though. I haven't been to KOA West or Powhattan.

We now spend our summers in a leased cottage in Black Mountain, so have grown out of touch with the campgrounds.

Dang.  I wish this discussion happened earlier.  On something of a last-minute basis we spent a night at KOA East (Swannanoa) last week.  Phone reservations were quick and driving directions given by staff were spot-on.  Pull-through with full hookups was $62.  Site was crushed stone and adequately level.

We were greeted and escorted to our site by friendly golf-cart drivers; trash was picked up on-site early the next morning; and there were two attractive bodies of water and a stream to visit on the campground.  Plenty of kid-oriented things to do at this KOA. 

However sleeping was difficult due to our site's (B-14) nearness to noisy Route 70 and a train that passed nearby at least three times during the night.  If you stay here you'd be well advised to study the campground map and make your selection accordingly.

Our full hookup site at Lake Powhatan was $20/night with our Senior Access Pass, $31 without it. The only "traffic noise" at night was if we happened to notice the host's golf cart going by for the ~11 pm security check.

On Gary Brinck's recommendation, I have stayed at Mama Gertie's three times and won't stay anywhere else when in Asheville visiting my son and grandchildren. The last time I was there, I stayed on the top tier of the mountain and the views were spectacular.

It's a popular place! We booked our site for last month last September...
