Anyone have a good RV route from Austin TX to Lafayette LA that avoids Houston but doesn't add too much travel time/mileage?

If, I was doing that, now, I'd just run up US 79 to Milano, and take US 190 across. It's a solid road, mostly 4 lane, and doesn't add a lot of miles. It averages pretty good speeds, and is mostly low stress. Though you might want to look at state highway department web site to see what kind of construction is going on. It's been about five years since I've been on it, so I can't give up to date details, but I'd bet on it still being a good run.

Any alternative you choose to avoid the Houston area completely is going to add significant time and distance to the trip. You could take TX99 around Houston and other than that take the usual route but that will add both time and distance. You could also leave I10 at I610 and go around the main part of the city. That would probably add the least time & distance to the trip and t would avoid the worst part of the city. I consider I610 to be less traffic but the most important thing is to avoid all rush periods through any part of Houston.
