Battleborn Battery Safety Issue

A major safety issue with Battleborn lithium batteries has come to light, largely due to Will Prowse’s teardown videos and ongoing discussions across RV forums. The core problem centers on the use of a single steel bolt and a plastic spacer to connect the positive terminal to the internal buss bar. If the terminal overheats, the plastic can melt, leading to a loose connection, increased resistance, and potentially dangerous heat buildup. Multiple members referenced similar failures... More...
That is so un-American! :D

Sadly, you are correct. My grandparents and my wives grandparents lived thru the Great Depression in an area that was always depressed enough. We have stories and writings about it. Not to mention them living long enough to tell us about it. I still hate banks. Americans do not understand the exponential function. But I do understand your point.

You must be younger than I am (76). My parents lived through it and I noticed such people do not like to use credit until they have no choice. And they are usually cheapskates.

My mom told be she had a five dollar bill in the middle of the great depression. It was a problem because she could not find anybody to cash it! Five bucks then was around $120.00 in today's money.

I am a bit younger, still in my 50's but am in a somewhat similar boat, my mother was born in 1939 on a farm in the delta region of Louisiana on the banks of the Ouachita river, and lived for the first 7 years of her life in a house without electricity, running water, or even glass windows (only wood shutters). I was looking through some family genealogy stuff this weekend, her father, my grandfather was born in 1898 he served in the US Navy in the 1920's, in fact I think he was discharged from the Navy 100 years ago later this year, and his father, my great great grandfather was born in 1850, died in 1940 at the age of 90, something that was practically unheard of at the time.

That really does start to put time into perspective, I am only 3 generations removed from someone in my family that was a teenager during the civil war, and that was still alive when my mother was born.

Returning to the original subject of this thread, the Battleborn battery "defect"....

First, full disclosure: I'm an Associate of Li-Time batteries. Makes sense, as there are 9 of them in the coach and trailer. So if you click on the link, and purchase stuff, I do receive a small referral commission.

Having read the posts concerning the defect that seems to exist in the Battleborn battery design, and watching the referenced videos, I reached out to the design team at Li-Time. They have responded that the Li-Time batteries are not designed in the same way, and do not have the "defect" in their batteries. A detailed explanation was sent to me, as well as photos of the interior.

I can't comment on the design of the other brands of batteries made in China. But I can confidently say that Li-Time batteries do not have the potential problems created by the "defect" in the Battleborn batteries.

If you choose to go to the Li-Time site directly, you may still use the code BARON8 to save 8% on all purchases.

I've watched numerous Will Prowse videos where he's torn down batteries and their internal construction and components are remarkably consistent from brand to brand. None of them use the internal buss bar and the bolt with a plastic spacer that's at the heart of the Battleborn issues.

Did Battleborn batteries get a good reputation at first simply because they coast more and are built in the USA?

Sure seems like it!

Battle Born got their reputation by being the first company to actively promote drop-in 100 a/h LiFeP04 batteries to the RV market. Including giving free batteries to social influencers.

I have a lot of respect for Will Prowse, who doesn't accept free batteries or marketing payments. He's gone from being one of Battle Born's biggest supporters when they started producing the first LiFeP04 batteries to being one of their loudest critics when the defects became known.

I've never liked the Battle Born design, it's too labor intensive using dozens of cylindrical cells which have to be manually assembled in parallel to make a single 100 a/h cell. Then stacked 4 deep to make a 12 volt battery. The rest of the world went with 100 a/h prismatic cells which are now commodity items. They're why you can buy 12 volt 100 a/h batteries with full features (cold weather charging protection, over temperature and overcurrent cutoffs, etc,) for $250.

And now we're finding out Battle Born's cell modules are just pressed against each other to make contact, relying on the plastic case to provide the needed pressure.

Lou, actually he does accept both, but he has a contract saying that he is free to give his own opinions and payment is not subject to a positive review. He did a whole video on how he makes money on youtube a couple of months ago. Basically companies can pay him for reviews, but he keeps the money no matter what he says, he also tries to use the money from the paid reviews to buy the products to be tested, often going through 3rd party shipping names, and locations to avoid being given hand picked samples.
