Member Title: Gillette, WY to Tetons
Members focused on two main ways to reach the Tetons from Gillette, with the strongest support going to heading south to Casper and then taking US 26/287 toward Moran. That option was described as a decent drive, scenic, and likely the least steep among the routes mentioned. Another well-regarded option was the Shoshoni and Dubois route over Togwotee Pass, also praised for scenery, though members noted uncertainty about some early segments and that it may not be ideal if minimizing grades is...

Midwest, Shoshoni, Dubois route is shorter and its a beautiful drive from Dubois over the Towgotee Pass to Tetons. Note that i don't know about the Smokey Gap Road at the beginning. Assuming you might....

Casper, Muddy Gap, Farson, Pinedale, Tetons is also beautiful once you get to the Wind Rivers but slightly longer.

You could do Buffalo, Worland, Thermopolis then Shoshoni, Dubois, Tetons.

Note we haven't driven the sections from Gilette to Casper.

Avoid Wy 387 through Edgerton, I took that route last summer and there was about 20 miles of bad pavement

In that case you might need to go to Casper then up to join route I suggested.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Planning a route back in July that would take me to the Tetons. However, when I check campground availability, it looks like I missed the bus. It looks like Moran Vista Camping Area is my best bet . . . anyone been there?

Well, in my not-so-humble-opinion, I believe it is worth a few miles to just run 90 and 25 down to Casper, and take US 26/287 from Casper to Moran.
It's a decent drive, and the view coming off Togwotee pass is worth every mile. Margo and I never tired of that drive.
I read somewhere that if you do that at the right time of the morning after you cross over the pass you have the rising sun behind you illuminating the mountains in front of you.

I've spent hours and hours perusing this area on Google Maps. I'm not sure what you are referring to as Moran Vista Camping area.

THIS location is rather popular and is generally known as Upper Teton View. Its a disorganized first come, first serve area on Forest Service road 30340 which runs off of Shadow Mtn Road, just outside the park boundaries.

Yes. It's an old gravel pit. 5 nights only in these "forest" campgrounds. There are some spots also along the road once you get to that area and a few further in. Note that there was a bit of a rough patch on that road but depending on your rig doable.

I know a couple that moved from site to site (the one Charles mentioned), probably for a few weeks. Not sure that's allowed but maybe it wasn't too busy. There are camp hosts.

Alternatively there are campgrounds coming from Alpine up to Jackson. Might be reservable. Also keep checking as I got a site at Gros Ventre last year for several nights a few weeks before we were there.

Colter Campground will also get cancellations.

There are several other places around depending on your size.

Pacific Creek Campground is up a dirt road but a reasonable site but it's about 20 minutes in with just the truck. Ive never seen it full.

Slide Lake has sites too. And further up.the dirt road is a other small site Crystal Creek i think. Only a pit toilet there but beautiful area. Not free.

If you have a 31' motorhome with toad the gravel pit is ideal if you can't get a pitch.

Well, in July, campground availability around The Tetons and Yellowstone is "Catch as you can", and "hope somebody cancels out." People reserve a year ahead around there.
