I need a recommendation on how to carry two bikes.  We have a Montana Mountaineer fifth wheel.  I have looked at several bumper mount models, but unfortunately the bumper on my rig is very close to the body, which prevents attaching something on the top (see attached photo).  I did not think it was wise to mount anything beneath the bumper (clearance).

I running a little short on time (under two weeks until we hit the road), but I am wondering if I should just get a hitch professionally installed?

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

I would second that idea.

We had a slightly different issue, towing a Honda Accord with our motorhome, but having a 2" Saris two bike rack that mounted on our 4Runner. I had a 1.25" standard hitch fitted to the Honda (because they didn't make a larger receiver hitch for the Honda), then used an adapter to 2". Now the motorhome or the Honda can mount the bikes, as needed.  8)

So when the MH tows the Honda, the Honda tows the bikes!

Thanks.  Is this typically something that can be installed on-site (RV park) or would I have to take it somewhere?

Not sure what you have to mount and attach to underneath your trailer, and whether you would need anything welded. I had mine done at a trailer/hitch shop, so ...... It's not complicated if you have the equipment.

Looks like you already have a bike rack on your ladder. Is it not satisfactory? I also have one like that but have never used it...don't feel comfortable with all that weight bouncing around on the road tugging on the ladder. Don't have a bumper nor a hitch on the rear of my 5er. If I did, I would go with a hitch mount rack.

I use the ladder rack for on-site storage.  It isn't practical for bikes on the road because they would hang off one side.

Here is a photo of the bumper attachment.  Can a hitch be mounted to those supports?

The bumper should be strong enough for two bike but not for anything else. Here are two links for bumper mounted racks and hitches.

Thanks.  I tried the Swagman S80605 but there isn't enough clearance on top of the bumper (it's too close to the RV).  See first picture above.

Try this link for a hitch. I posted the wrong link the first time

This might actually work.  The U-bolts with other Swagman product would fit around the top of the bumper.  Not much more, though.

Personally I do not trust the bumper for anything except to hold the stinky slinky.

Just curious...
Do you trust a company that can't put their sticker right side up?  Just wondered.

BTW, I have a 4 place Thule bike rack that has been used about the number of fingers you have that fits a 2" receiver.  It swings down for use on pickup trucks.  I would be willing to bet I could sell it to you for a song due to the fact the DW got a new SUV that it probably won't fit (full size Dodge PU to a Honda SUV).  If you're interested and in MI, let me know.

Since that item can likely be used on top and/or bottom of a bumper, I'd say the sticker placement doesn't really concern me.  :)

I would very interested, but I am in Oregon.

I have a similar problem as you with the closeness of the bumper to the camper body. I installed a bumper mount from Curt and it works well. Kind of a small pain to get the nut on the back side as there wasn't much room for my fat fingers, but still it didn't take 20 minutes to install. As for clearance, my bike rack extends enough to not be a problem, but you can add a 2" receiver extension to get the clearance you need. I have used a few different bike racks over the years, and found that the styles that have the bikes rest on there tires work best. The hanging types seem to always let the bikes 'sway'. And the type that bolt to the spare tire carrier are just plain junk. Here a some links to what I use....

Ultimately I will have a real hitch welded on, as I do pull my boat behind the fifth occasionally. Just got the 5'er this past summer and haven't had the time to get it done yet.
