Since we can do it ANYWHERE, we really enjoy birding. We have the ususal references, and before changes locations, try to review what we can expect to see in the new area.
South texas, is a real mecca, and is trying to continue Birding developement.
Some decent 10 power Binos, a Peterson's or Sibleys, and the National Geographic tome  for back at the RV, and you have everything you need.
Upgrade to a good spotting scope, and a long range camera as you progress.
This year I am trying out my new Canon EOS 5D with a variety of lenses, including a 100-400 zoom.

The birding in south Florida is to die for.....lots of variety and plenty of big, easily identified birds.
