has anyone on here ever replaced their motor on a  bunk bed before, want to make sure I do it right and safe

Hard to offer help, since there are all sorts of bunks beds and mechanisms. For starters, is it really a bunk, or one of those full beds that get raised to the ceiling during the day? Can you identify the brand name of the mechanism?  HappiJac (Lippert) is one common brand.

That looks to be a direct drive, geared track type of system, so you need to support the bed before you can remove the motor.  Otherwise it probably comes crashing down.  Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Happijac mechanics, so can't offer any detailed advice.
