CA EV mandate

Let’s try this again.

Ending California’s EPA power-grab will jump-start American auto and RV manufacturing
Thank goodness. It’s about time this EV-madness was brought back into the real world.

Why are “state’s rights” only expected to apply to states other than California? The article is long on rhetoric and short on information. What exactly happened? How will some EO similar change the ability of CA, the 4th strongest economy in the world, to regulate its own needs? And since the only things that the article mentioned was the diesel Class A restrictions this year, note that Indiana doesn’t built any Class A chassis. The Freightliner chassis is built in Georgia, and the Spartan chassis is built in Michigan. PowerGlide is built in Alabama and Georgia (or I think that is where it got moved recently). People who don’t live in air polluted areas do not understand the very real impact of bad air; it affects neonatal birth weight, adds billions to health costs, etc. And if other states want to have the same regulations, why shouldn’t they?

Since this has gone all political.. I'm staying out of it other than to say EVs are the future.
No matter how in love with ICE folks EV's are coming.. They have been around since the days of Thomas Edison after all.

Oh, FOX,...

[sigh]
I'm sorry - are these sources sufficient?

More to the point, these aren't Executive Orders. Trump signed into law two bills passed by Congress. The first one which grabbed the headlines cancels CA's 2035 EV mandate. The second bill prohibits states including CA from imposing emission standards stricter than what is required by the Federal Government so there is a level playing field nationwide. This removes the threat to future sales of diesel motorhomes (and trucks) in CA.

Yeah, actually, Don't take anything I say personally. I'm going to just leave it at that.

The problem is that we are likely to see a couple decade's worth of work on environmental matters kicked off the table for yet another decade. And I suspect my only consolation will be that I probably won't be around long enough to see the damage that will be done.

There is a time and place for everything. EV's just aren't there yet. Maybe someday with more advanced engineering and development they will succeed.

EVs are old news. The next fad will be the Chinese flying car. DonTom, you need to buy a couple of these and convince us why everyone wants and needs one :D And give us your predictions of when to expect a flying Class A. Wait, I think there already was one called the Hindenburg.

Someone just flew an all electric airplane. No comment on it just saw it on the snooze (News, normally asleep on the job these days)_

The houses built up here during the pipeline boom were all electric. As soon as gas became available, they were all converted to gas heat.

Electric ovens/stoves have been around since the late 1890's, but even today no serious chef cooks with electric.

Schick marketed the first electric razor in 1928. Today there's a wide selection of different corded/cordless shavers yet about 70% of us still use a blade.

Some things, like lighting, are an easy win for electric as evidenced by the lack of kerosene and seal oil lamps lately. Other things, not so much.

Electric ovens are used almost exclusively in pro kitchens. They are convection and heat more evenly than gas. Gas burners on a stove are becoming less popular as more people add induction. It keeps pro kitchens a lot cooler because the heat only goes into the pot, and home cooks like it because it is so safe around kids. I still prefer propane in my motorhome because we boondock so frequently, but at home I have an electric convection oven and gas burners, bought 7 yeas ago. When I replace the combo oven/burner stove, I will change to induction burners. Where I live, it is still cheaper to heat with natural gas, but the margin between total yearly energy consumption with gas heat and electric AC and heat pumps to do both is narrowing. We still have probably 10 years with our current system, and then we will look carefully at what will work best. Things are changing pretty fast.

My wife and I had an induction range for 25 years at our old house. When we moved we thought we'd get used to cooking with gas again. The gas oven was an easy switch but the gas burners are like cooking over a fire in the stone age.

The induction range top heated faster and temperature control was precise by setting the dial to a number. With gas getting the temperature right is an art and we aren't artists. And cleaning up the induction glass surface was a breeze and cleaning the gas range is a royal pain..

If our contractor had installed a 240v line to the range area the 25 yo induction range would be here in our new house and the new state of the art gas range would have been sold with our old house.
