Just read that Cali gas prices could go to $10 per gal.!!! Could this be anywhere near being true???

Safe travels and all the best.

That's on of the "benefits" of living in California. They want to ban ICE vehicles and this is one way of forcing everyone to convert to EV's
Of course California does not have the electrical infrastructure to support the added demand.

California has the highest gas prices in the country, but not $10/gal. According to Gas Buddy, today's state average is $4.61 but some locations will be higher, of course.

The "could reach $10" is just media fear-mongering, projecting a wild guess as to future oil prices if there is open war with Iran and then extrapolating to CA's higher costs. Click bait, in other words.

When you say that something could reach some price but give no timeline, then it is hard to deny. I remember when the fear mongers used to tell all of us that gasoline prices were going to pass $1/gallon and then it was $2/gallon and so on. If you consider the history of prices and wages, they are probably right that someday gasoline will cost $10/gallon, but will it be in our lifetime? The prediction of prices of anything with no time period stated are pretty hard to debate but they are also of no real value, even if true.

When we bought our first house, it was new, all brick exterior, and 1200 square feet which was pretty much average in 1965 for a three-bedroom home. We paid $16,600 for that house and my dad thought that we were crazy! Today you can't even buy a new car for that price.

Of course California does not have the electrical infrastructure to support the added demand.
Most areas in CA will not have an issue as is, for many reasons.

"With 15 times more electric cars expected on California’s roads by 2035, the amount of power they consume will grow exponentially. But the California Energy Commission says it will remain a small fraction of all the power used during peak hours — jumping from 1% in 2022 to 5% in 2030 and 10% in 2035."

The big issue has always been extra hot days where everybody and his brother has a A/C on in many areas of CA. EVs usually charge when other usage is very slow, such as overnight.

Also, efficiency of many high power items have increased and so has solar on houses (such as my CA house).

And not all EVs will be charging at the same time. Most people in CA only drive around 30 miles per day, which means around 8.5KWH per day average per car. A home A/C will use more than that on any hot day.

Here's the highest ever gas prices in CA. Not anywhere close to $10 per gallon.

What is the highest gas price ever in California?

highest recorded average price
PriceDate
Regular Unleaded$6.3866/12/22
Diesel$6.9586/20/22

I actually did see a $9.99 gallon diesel one time in Death Valley at Furnace Creek, widely recognized as the most expensive place to buy fuel in the U.S. When we were there last February, diesel was down to $6.50-$7.50 or so. But that is one station located at the far end of the supply chain in a location with basically zero competition. I don’t think the sky is falling.

Moneywise says $8/gallon. 2 California refineries are closing in 2026 and gas will have to be imported. And that affects other states as well. Just another way to force people to buy an EV.
