Though I think Steve has relented a bit on his original position

Following some persuasive discussion, I have gained a better understanding of why some people like campfires.

Nonetheless, it was still a most interesting thread and I thank Steve for provoking discussion on the pros and cons of campfires and the mystical aspects of them.

I'm adding my 2 cents late on this one but I just wanted to say that I LIKE the smell of campfires, I have asthma, and I know how to stay out of the heavy smoke and just enjoy the campfire smell. And we just spent several days at a variety of midwest/east campgrounds where the campers with campfires seemed to be having few problems with the bugs (see, there is a use for a campfire).

I happen to enjoy a campfire, and the smell of a wood fire isn't unpleasant to me.  It's a part of outdoor living and it's not going away.

Outdoor living? In a class A motorcoach?  ;D

Wendy  How do you like the Casino Queen Park  Beautiful view of the Arch.  Lots to do in the Gateway  You arfe now in my old stomping grounds.

Awesome view of the Arch out the front window of the motorhome.....well, there was before it got dark. Now all I can see is a little red dot at the top. Mike wants to ride to the top tomorrow....he'll be going alone. We'll probably take the Metro over and leave the dog here in the nice air-conditioned coach. I like the way you can pick up the phone outside the office and they'll send the Security shuttle to take you to the casino or to the Metro. Very handy.

What else should we do while we're here? We have tomorrow and maybe one more day.

By all means if at all possible go to Shaws Garden or the MacDonald's Science Center. Also the Jewel Box in Forest Park is always loaded with beautiful flowers.  The short time you are there makes it difficult.  Wih I were there and you had a week or so.  Great town and great food out on the Hill.  The Hill is the Italian area just of Kingshighway.  Some of the best food in the country there.  Especially the toasted Ravioli. Good Luck

Wendy:

Our summer visits to St Louis were never complete without a visit to Forrest Park. If you have a day cover the Zoo, Art museum, History museum and the Muny Opera. The park itself is a beautiful walk or drive.

Very true about both of the last 2 posts and also just across the river in ILL  2 wonderful exhibits of past culture.  The Lewis and Clark park in Hartford, and the Mounds in Collinsville.  The mounds is one of Indian heritage, this I found to be one of the best programs in the country.

I also vote for a campfire.  We have been in a group that has maintained the campfire during the entire trip.  We (specifically I) cook on our campfire.  I will agree a wet smouldering smokin' campfire can be annoying, but it is all part of the camping and outdoor experience.  Unless we were on the road, and stopping off for just a night, we would not camp in a CG that did not permit a campfire.

Another good reason for the campfire, it keeps the bugs at a distance too.

Wellll, the Braves are in town.  You could take the Metro across the river and catch the Cards/Braves at the new Busch Stadium.  My son and gf will be there this evening.

What direction are you planning on leaving the area?

Hah! You've obviously never heard about the dreaded Smoke-Seeking Tarantula (Aphonopelma chalcodes; speciosa Charcoalarus) ;D

Just kidding! While the desert Southwest has many species of tarantula, they are considered harmless to humans. They rarely bite, and their venom is harmless except for some minor swelling and itchiness.

Actually it was the L.A. Dodgers who were in town. We thought seriously about going to the game (both big Dodgers fans from eons ago) but it was hot and humid and promised rainshowers for game time so we decided not to. Plus it was sold out except for SRO. Ended up not being rained out or even delayed but it did go 14 innings!!!!!! So we gambled a bit and relaxed in the nice A/C motorhome.

Isn't this thread getting off track
And your point is.......???

Many topics don't stick exactly to the original post theme, and that adds a little diversity and interest. When warranted, we will split off some posts into a new topic in the appropriate message board and give it a title of its' own. Until then, no harm; no foul. ;)
