Can you imagine a world without spell checker??

Consider myself a decent speller. But at times, for whatever reason my brain shuts down when trying to type out a relatively simple word. For example, I recently was "stumped" when trying to spell "adamant". Uh... adi..., no... adame... no... But hey, just punch in any mangled spelling version and let the browser do the work for you:

Aha, [chuckling) I see you're having a bit of problem trying to spell this word. By any chance, is the word you can't seem to figure out to spell "adamant"?? No worries, just click on the correct spelling here in the popup and we'll make sure readers don't know you're a bit challenged when it comes to proper spelling.
The problem being I think it's too easy to get lazier and lazier and just let auto-correct do the thinking for you.
absolutely, i turn them off on my phone, I hate having a machine "putting words into my mouth" so to speak as i type, they are for the modern generation who suffer from our disgustingly bad modern school system.

</rant> I find it difficult these days listening to college kids trying to explain something when all they can say is "like dude, it was so like you know, like he was like doing stuff and i was like "ok" that was cool..
</end rant>

I used to smack my kids when they would say "like" $#&%@$*^#$(^%#$^* !!!

I listened to an interview this morning.

I thought the sentence: " You know what I'm saying", was a thing of the past.

I was wrong.

I sure need the spell check now
I won a spelling bee in the 4th grade with the word Jack-o'-lantern. now if you see the unassisted scribble I put out now you would say this can't be the same guy.

It is hard for me to member life before spell checkers, as my first word processor program had one in 1984. I remember thinking how great it was, but don't really recall life without one.

My first word processor was Speedscript for the Commodore 64 and yes I had the optional spell check program.. Of course you could not download those. you had to type them in byte by byte by check sum by byte.. Oh the joy >

That was one amazing word processor however.. You could send any printer command so when a Doctorial candidate turned in his Thesis... Done in Speedscript and printed on a Dot Matrix. and his Proff said "Typed not word processed" Well. I showed him my Brother (Typewriter) with computer interface.. He had a problem drawing a "fill in the blank" as though Speedscript had that feature on the Dot Matrix. it had to be done differently on the brother... We simply put in the right commands and a couple days later he handed in his neatly Typed Thesis.

I liked that program... What I use today (Open office) is NOT better.

I have no idea how old you are but I'm soooo glad you feel your generation is perfect and all the others are morons.

Do your kids flinch when they actually say they “like” something?
LOL.. no after effects, I didn't do that for very long, just enough to make a point. They realized after a few years that bad grammar, inability to spell or express themselves were clearly attributes they didn't care for and they took the time to learn what the educational system failed to do.

I'm retired and clearly old school, not perfect by any means, it's just my observation over the years of how the school system has lowered their standards, anyone of age 65 and over will tell you the same. I'm confused as to why schools drop cursive writing and critical thinking skills in favor of this "politically correct" bull***t. I guess old school standards have no place in modern culture ?

Sheesh... if you're going to invent a new html code at least use proper structure:

<rant>xxx</endrant> not </rant>...</end rant>

{sorry, couldn't resist... :D )

I'm age 78 and I haven't used cursive for at least a decade. I type notes, grocery lists, etc. on my smartphone or laptop. OK, I do sign my name in cursive.

On the other hand I occasionally say (I can't believe I spelled that right on the first try)
Been there!

Not sure how to type a certain word and just bang our some letters trying to get close enough for spell check to pop up the correct spelling, and when it just accepts my version I'm thinking there must be something wrong so I go back and intentionally misspell only to find out I was correct to begin with.

Yeah, I know, weird...

I'm 81 and still use cursive from time to time, not just for signatures. When I take notes it's usually on paper, rather than on my pocket computer (sometimes called a phone).

Because it is distracting to those that can spell, and it implies a lack of attention to detail or concern for accuracy. "My breaks are overheating! "

Spell Check won't catch that because 'breaks' is actually a correctly spelled word. The program can't read your mind to determine how the sentence should be structured. All it does is tell you when a word is misspelled.

I am continually amazed when I see some college (or professional) athlete that they let do an interview before or after a game, and for 2 minutes all I can hear is the word 'like' in literally every sentence. Every time, I internally beg the coaching staff to not allow someone in front of a camera in the future who has zero training in public speaking. And no, it doesn't make me feel as if he is one of 'us' regular folks. It makes me feel as if the guy is illiterate with a very short vocabulary.

When I was in school, the only spell checker we had was a Mirriam-Webster's Dictionary .... and NO, it was NOT an electronic - on-line model. It was made of paper and ink. The second spell checker was the teacher's review of everything and lots and lots of red circles on our papers (that we had to write on actual paper) and then instructions to look up the work and spell them right!

In a sense, spell checkers are like GPS devices. GPS might tell you to "Go this way..." and spell check might tell you to "Use this word..." but in each case, a degree of oversight on the user's part determines which option is the most appropriate.
