I am a Canadian looking to purchase a 5th wheel in the USA and continue on to Mexico. Does anyone know if I can register it to my Canadian address with Canadian plates without bringing it back to Canada. I will be leaving it in Mexico on my RV site.
Thanks

That's a question for your provincial motor vehicle people to answer, but I'll bet the answer is no. At least, no unless you can somehow get the US-built trailer certified to meet CSA vehicle standards without bringing it to Canada for inspection.

The answer is a tricky legal status thing, not an RVing question at all. The OP is effectively wanting to import the new trailer to Canada by giving it a Canadian tile and tags. Once his province issues those documents, he is free to drive it across the border and anywhere in Canada, and even sell it to another Canadian. My bet is that the provincial & federal government is not going to allow that without the trailer being certified as legal for vehicle import. I don't think a promise to leave it in Mexico forever will be sufficient. But I'm not Canadian or licensed to practice Canadian law, so my opinion is worth only what you paid for it: ZIP!

I think the OP is asking "does he need to register it in Canada" if he doesn't intend to bring the 5'er back into Canada.

I'm wondering if he can get something like a 30-day or however long transport tag from the state he buys the rig in, take it to Mexico, where it sounds like he wants to set it up on a seasonal or permanent site, and not bother with having the rig registered at all.

Perhaps a dealer, especially in the Southwest, could help with the answer.

To travel in Mexico it looks like you need some documentation including registration!

That's probably what he ought to be asking, but what he said was:

He needs a title and some documentation to get across the Mexican border, even if he never brings it back to the USA or Canada. Don't know if he can get a USA state title with a Canadian address or if a temporary transport plate would be sufficient for Mexican border officials.
