I will probably renew my passport soon and next summer take an RV trip into Canada, which I have not been to for many years.

To be able to legally operate my ham stuff up there, what will I need to do?

It's reciprocal. AA6GA/VE#. Carry a copy of your license. I was KA9LXP/VO1 for a year and a half.

That's great news! What I was hoping for. I always carry a small Extra Class ham ticket card in my wallet.

But what is the proper prefix for Alberta these days? For example, I hear VA6 & VE6 on the air these days, so would I be AA6GA/VA6 or AA6GA/VE6? or does it make any difference? Same issue in BC, but I think they even have another prefix. So what do I use for a "/" suffix?

I've heard of Canadian Bacon
But many Canadians never heard of "Canadian Bacon" unless they have been here in the USA. They call it "Back Bacon" up there. In some areas of Canada, it is called "Peameal Bacon".

I think it's your discretion. Me going back to times before the VA prefixes I more readily identify with VE. I kept a copy of my ticket folded into my passport thinking if I were to ever be challenged to present it, it would probably be at a border crossing (what's with all the antennas and radios?). It was most fun during sweepstakes, the maritimes do not have a lot of hams and just dropping /VO1 created a respectable pileup on HF. I won a CW contest one year because I ended up being the only VO1 to submit a log. :)

If you operate any of the Digital voice modes.. Dstar. YSF. DMR and a list of others. google quadnet array ham
Or do it the easy way Quadnet Network

There is a net on Saturday 6pm Eastern time the NCS (Jeff VE6DV if I recall correctly) is quite knowledgeable about international operation I believe. (Moved there from Detroit area) Alas the only info I have on how to do it dates from 1978 and..... IT's changed.

Also ARRL.ORG.. good starting point when you need info on Ham stuff.

Alas the others I know... Who do that. are all from Canada and operate occasionally in the US.

It would seem that in Canada it would be " bacon", like "Chinese Food" in China is just food.

I think it's your discretion.
And that will mean I will be a /VEx. The "E" is better on CW, the only mode I use. And since I only use auto CQs, I will have to program in a "AA6GA/VE7" & others for the areas of Canada I expect to be in. That is for my KX2, the only rig I use from my RV--with a KPAX100 RF AMp, which usually gives me 110 watts with my Lifep04 battery.

Tnx for the info.!

IIRC, plain one word "bacon" in Canada will be the same type of "bacon" as here in the USA, not what we call "Canadian Bacon".

I don't think "Canadian Bacon" came from Canada. Let me check . . hold on, I will be right back.

See here.

"Canadian Bacon is a misnomer. The only place they call it that is in the United States.
Just as they don’t cal Philly Cheese steak in Philadelphia, or Buffalo Wings in Buffalo."

Not true, all bacon in Canada is Canadian Bacon.

We called them philly cheese steaks when i lived there lol. I miss Pats
IMO, the best Philly Cheesesteak is at the Sport's Bar in the Cal~Neva Casino in Reno. Just below the restaurant that also serves a Philly Cheesesteak--but it is different and lousy by comparison.

The worst one I ever had was on S Virginia Street, a place that advertises "The best Philly Cheesesteak in Reno", which is just a mile or so south of Cal~Neva.

There is no place ourside of phila you can get a philly cheese steak regardless of what they call it. Most places wont use cheese whiz and put stuff like peppers on it. Not opposed to trying new things but the guy who invented it, Pat from Pats steaks didnt use that stuff. Since he didnt trademark the name people will use it.

The worst cheesesteak i ever got from a food truck in center city was better than the best one i have had anywhere else.

I had a cheesesteak in quartzite and the guy claimed he had the rolls shipped in from amoroso daily. It wasnt a bad sandwich but tge rolks were the standard sub roll common on the western part of the country and not a philadelphia hoagie roll. When the roll is like a mini crusty italian bread load rather than soft it makes all the difference in the world. If he was getting them from amoroso they were ripping him off cause it wasnt the right roll.

It is hard to make a steak sandwich and not have it taste good but a real phila cheesesteak is something else lol. I like genos too but there is something about pats. I have never had one and didnt imediately want a 2nd. I think they put crack in them lol. There is also something cool about being able to drive down to phila at 3am on sunday morning and get a cheesesteak.

It’s reciprocal Don. Just use your call sign.

Heads up. A lot of repeaters up here are coded so maybe check online for code info depending on what you intend to do.

John,

I had no idea you were a ham. But with only 101 checking up on you on QRZ.COM, it's obvious you're not very active. It was at 100 exactly before me.

13,341 have check up on me and most of those were just in the last few years because I wasn't active for countless years before that.

BTW, are you really up that far north, in the Cold Lake area?

I don't do repeaters. No VHF or UHF, but I do have several rigs capable, including handhelds that I never use, at least not for many years. I am 100% HF CW only.

I had no idea. I have never been to Phila, but if I ever am (very unlikely) I will be sure to try one.

But I wonder why they cannot be made out here in the west--or why nobody tries.

I dunno, maybe it's like a Chicago Hotdog, you can't imitate one at home ( I've tried) and no place I've ever bought one in any other part of the country comes close, except there was a place 40 yrs. back on 23rd. St. in Panama City, Fla. The owner was from Chicago.
