When I was living in WA state, a new Indian casino opened up about halfway between our house and major shopping in Sequim. I'd often stop there and have lunch in their buffet on my way to the stores.

One day I decided to "invest" a $20 bill in one of their slot machines. I found after a few initial pulls it would let me win up to about $30, then the total would gradually decline to a zero balance. Tried it again on another machine with another $20 bill and got the same initial spike. Out of curiosity I tried using a ticket from the change machine and the winning spike didn't happen. Aha, a light bulb went off - they figured only a novice gambler would insert cash and the initial gain was to encourage them to keep playing!

For the next 6 months I'd stop in every time I went into town. I'd insert $20 into a machine, cash out when the total rose to about $28 and then let my winnings pay for lunch in the buffet.

We don't do casinos. I've worked too hard for my money to throw it away. I'm simply not a gambler. And I find it interesting that a "high roller" would be irate over his relationship with his casino. What does anyone expect. They are in business for one thing... to take your money.

OK, enough of the fussing.

Near where I live there is a casino / horse racing track (Anderson, Indiana). We were camping at Mounds State Park (Anderson, Indiana), and we had our 9 year old grandson with us. I decided to take him to the casino and watch a couple horse races. Kids cannot go into the casino, but they can go into the horse racing area and stands.

Earlier that day, I went over first and picked up a "program". Now, I will admit ..l. I've never done a horse race myself either. The lady at the sales window educated me on how the programs works, the races, the horses, the odds and all of that.

I took all that information back to the camper with me and my grand son and I sat down and I explained to him how it all worked and how the gambling works.

So he studied the program out and he picked the horses that he tough would win. We were NOT going to gamble, this was just for fun to make the whole event more exciting for him.

So, off we went. We sat through the first 6 races. And I'll be dog-gone! That little squirt picked 3 of those horses that came in 1st place! The one's I picked, none of them came in first. None.

After the 6th race, he was getting pretty board of the whole thing and we decided to leave. Maybe that was the one time I should have laid some money down based on his choices ... not mine!
My wife picks them by how "Pretty" they are. She wins all the time. I pick only long shots. I win about half of the time. But we only go about every three years. We have more fun at the Dachsund and Corgi races at the local tracks. No betting. But downright hilarious.

My wife and stopped in at the Sky City Casino about 60 miles west of Albuquerque. The best part of this visit was going out to the Acoma Indian reservation and Pueblo on the top of the Mesa. One of the best experiences and trips I've ever taken.

This is me standing on top of the Mesa. Beautiful view. The Pueblo is all adobe houses and a really old Spanish mission.

Yep, Sky City is a neat place to visit. Not only the nice views (I love New Mexico scenery), but the interesting history and all of the exhibits and shops.

Maybe I'll stop when I go through there one of these times when it isn't 30 degrees and snowing.
Went through there eastbound in December and then again westbound a couple of weeks ago. Same weather both times.

This thread is a year old but I just wanted to say that your casino camping life hack sounds pretty awesome! Getting a voucher for a free meal just by standing and studying the menu is a sweet deal. It's great to hear about these opportunities that some high rollers might be willing to share with fellow campers.

My wife never found a casino she didn't like. Always had a few dollars to contribute. Fortunately, she usually leaves with some of their money. I'm not that lucky and more often than not, what I've lost offsets a bit of what she's won. I'll join her and maybe INVEST $5 -20 but that's only because when the wife is there, I'm a bit of a captive audience.
