There are a number of nice looking state park campgrounds within the confines of the Cherokee Nation tribal land, Cherokee Area at Grand Lake of the Cherokees on the Neosho river, just below the dam, Bernice area of Grand Lake State park, several different state and federal campgrounds on Tenkiller Ferry Lake, and a few others scattered around.

Just outside the tribal boundaries near the southern tip of the land is Lake Eufaula and the rather large Lake Eufaula State Park with three different campgounds. Arrowhead SP is just south of the town of Eufaula, near McAlester

The tribal land is about 120 mi N-S at its tallest point and about 80 mi E-W at its widest, and is almost 7,000 sq mi in size.

We used to live in Tahlequah, capitol of the Cherokee Nation, when we taught at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. Lovely country with rolling hills and a low deciduous forest. As for camping, I have never found any of the Oklahoma State Parks not to be good. Depending on the time of year, you might look along the Illinois River (yes, there is an Illinois River in eastern Oklahoma) and take a canoe float. Do it during the week because it gets rowdy on weekends. Visit the amazing historic sites all over, and cry at the cruelty of the Trail of Tears.

Planning on going the end of September/early October. Looked at Cherokee campground in Sequoyah state park. Would like to see the museums, etc. Looks like most things are in/around Tahlequah, but looking for other suggestions. Is Trail of Tears a museum?

You will find out about the Trail of Tears in just about all the museums. It is one of the worst things done to an entire tribe, right up there with the Long Walk of the Navajos. Thousands died. But there are good things too. Take a look at Attractions
