Looking for the best route from Colter Bay to Cody WY. Leaving from Colter Bay on August 4, arriving in Cody on that same afternoon. Will have spent 6 days in Yellowstone prior to Colter Bay. Currently planning on traveling south on Route 26, Route 20, and Route 120 towards Cody. Any help will be appreciated.

We drove much of your proposed route when we were there in 2017, though we did not cover the short stretch of 26 around Riverton (from the intersection of 287 to Shoshoni). The drive from Shoshni to Thermopolis is very scenic in parts, so is the drive from Colter bay to Dubois, east of Dubois on 26 not so much. 120 does not look like much on the map, but is a good road, just make sure to have a full tank of fuel when you leave Thermopolis as there is almost nothing along the way on 120, just one very small town (Meeteetse). If we ever go back to the area, I plan to stop and see Meeteetse, it looked like an interesting small town.

We have done that route in reverse and it's great. Stop in Meeteetse if the museum is open, its very interesting.

Thermopolis is a great stop too. Hot Springs, great fishing at Boysen Lake as well as camping, and the Dinosaur museum is supposed to be great.

You could go farther North from Thermopolis and across the 431 (fairly flat and a quiet road, watch for animals) and stop at the Gooseberry Badlands before continuing to Meeteetsee.

Thank you for the information. We will look into the museum and the other sites.

Any reason you're not looking at taking 191 north to 14 east to Cody? I've driven this route in a 43ft MH towing a jeep. Pretty ride. Half the distance and 1 hour shorter time. Yes you will be driving slower as it is not a nice straight hwy like 26, but it's still less total time.

I also wondered why you are not taking the more direct 191 north to 14 east? It is a little hilly and curvy, but a very nice drive. Buffalo Bill State Park is on the north shore of Buffalo Bill Reservoir, just before Cody. And don't miss the Buffalo Bill Center of the West museum in Cody--worth 2-4 hours, at least.
