???

I'm looking to take my family camping in Feburary in/around the Pensacola/Gulf Shores area.

I'm looking for a good campgroud/state park maybe? Ideally something a little private - I don't mind driving a little bit to see the attractions! However, I'm really not looking for a 'KOA' type of thing where we are packed in awning to awning!

I would appreciate any suggestions or advice!

Thanks very much!

For years we always went to Tampa area, Loved it in comparison with north gulf area  Way more to do down south.  try this  this is where we always  stayed.  http://www.baybayou.com/Slideshow.htm  Think you'll enjoy it.

Sounds like you should look at Gulf Shores State Park. Their website says all sites have been refurbished  http://www.alapark.com/parks/feature.cfm?parkid=22&featureid=7

Everything in that area has has been refurbished  in some manner or another.  Hurricane ALLey

I recommend Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola. They have a small but nice campground and the Rangers were very friendly when we were there. It's across the bay from Pensacola and right next to Ft. Pickens. Geronimo was held there after he was captured. It's a very interesting fort to visit, the sunsets are gorgeous, and the beach has the greatest sand ever. It's actually gypsum which you will find at White Sands National Monument.  You can find some info here: http://www.gulf-shores-alabama-condo-rentals.com/ft-pickens.html

The campground at Ft. Pickens was destroyed in a recent hurricane and the access road is still closed.  See http://www.nps.gov/guis/ for more information on the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Ned,

That is sad news indeed. I really enjoyed our visit there. I hope they can get it back into shape soon. Unfortunately a government sponsored recreation facility is low on the list.

I suspect the road reconstruction is very low on the priority list for that part of the country.  And the campground even lower.  It was a nice place to visit and we also enjoyed our stay there.  I believe some forum members were camp hosts there some years ago.
