I'm not seriously shopping for a new truck but have been kicking tires. My 2010 GMC 2500 gasser has a CCC of 2,949 lbs. and while it does not like hills, it handles the pin weight of my 10,000-ish lb. 5th wheel pretty well. Some day I'd like to move up to a 3500 diesel. I've checked out two trucks this week similar to mine (2500, 4WD, extended or crew cab, 8' box) but with the Duramax. I know diesel engines weigh more so corresponding CCC figures are lower but wow! Just over 2,300 lbs. on a 2017 and just over 2,000 lbs. on a 2019. Tow ratings blow mine out of the water but it made me think that so many 250/2500 drivers out there must be overloaded but I'm sure have the "it's a diesel - it can tow anything" attitude. I will definitely go 1-ton next time!

My 2015 Silverado 3500HD LTZ, duramax SRW has a 3800lb capacity
newer ones may even have more.

2020 GM really stepped up their game with a new frame and a bunch more weight availability. My buddies 3500 2017 dually had 800lbs less cargo cap than my 2017 f350 dually. He traded and got a 2020 3500 dually and it has 200lbs more than my ford which is 1000lb increase which is impressive matched with a 10spd trans
My f350 payload is 5167lbs my 2013 3500 silverado was 3800.
Having a diesel drops pay by 700-800lbs but the torque and fuel saving in worth it
