Do I need additional Insurance to tow a vehicle behind my Class A?

Members widely agree that you are not legally required to purchase additional insurance specifically for towing a vehicle (toad) behind your Class A motorhome. Liability coverage for damage to others while towing is typically extended from your motorhome’s policy. However, this does not include collision or comprehensive coverage for the towed vehicle itself—those protections must come from the toad’s own insurance policy, which most RVers already maintain for their vehicles.

Hello all!

I read online somewhere that if I tow a vehicle behind my Dutch Star, I will need additional insurance for the toad. So starts my query. Both insurance carriers Dutch Star and Vehicle have not been able to provide any answers.

Does anyone have any experience with insuring their toad vehicle. We have separate insurance for the SUV being towed.

Progressive insures the Motorhome and Liberty insures the SUV. Neither company can tell us if additional insurance is required.

I use my Truck to sometimes tow a trailer and have not needed insurance for the trailer or additional insurance for the truck.

Thank you in advance for any information anyone can provide.

Michael

If by "need" you mean "required by law", the answer is No. If you mean "a good idea", that's a personal choice. To understand this better, you need to be more specific about the type of insurance you are asking about. Liability insurance is for damage done to someone else's person or property. Collision and Comprehensive insurance is for damage to the towed vehicle itself. Two different things.

Your motorhome insurance provides liability coverage for anything under tow. It does not, however, provide collision or comprehensive coverage for the towed vehicle. The towed vehicle needs it's own collision and comp for that protection, but it's your option to do so [or not]. Your SUV probably has its own liability, collision and comprehensive insurance already. If the vehicle is financed, the lender may require that you have Collision & Comp, but that's between you & the lender.

In the case of your truck towing the trailer, if the trailer was involved in an accident while under tow, damages to others would be covered by the truck's liability insurance but damage to the trailer itself would not be covered at all if the trailer had no insurance of its own. The choice to purchase that type of coverage [or not] is yours.

I’m a bit confused(some days it don’t take much), if I understand, you tow a vehicle behind your class A. I would imagine that ‘vehicle’ is an automobile of some sort? I get it your class A insurance policy would cover while ‘IN TOW’. Once you unhook the tow(automobile), you would need ‘auto insurance’.
