That is an old Navy knot used to store rope without tangling; then when needed you hold the correct end and throw the rest. It "unrolls" by itself.Even if I'm very careful to get a nice even and untwisted coil it seems like it'll still tangle in my extension cords.
best solution I've found is something I stumbled across several years ago, but wish that I had been shown this ages earlier!
Instead of a coil, I use "chain stitch" for my longer extension cords.... some call it daisy chain or "chain knot". Lots of variations to be found on this theme. Many times I see folks folding the cord in half before running the chain knot. Perhaps that's better but it's not something I've played with much. Maybe I should though because thinking about it now, I have on occasion still gotten tangles in my really long cords... sometimes I think it's when I try to untie it from the wrong end but sometimes I haven't figured out why it happens. Maybe it's when I partially pay it out, then when I put it back, I'm going in the opposite direction from the original chain??? Anyway, usually, though it works beautifully
With my hoses, I'll generally coil them but use a "figure-eight" coil instead of a typical twisted coil
I learned about that rope"knot" by reading dads Bluejackets manual he brought home after WWII.
