Does anybody here have an EV boat?

Back in the day there was a class of electric race boats that was pretty interesting. I don't see much on the intertubes on it anymore. Theres a facebook group by I'm not a member.

These guys were fun to follow - high voltage DC, lots of amps.

I did find a link of a guy I knew that did a boat conversion.

I recall reading recently that along with the EV mandate there was some movement to create "EB's" but I don't think development made it quite as far as EV's have before the mandate evaporated. The 100x difference in energy density vs gas is going to limit e-plane and e-boat practicality. Something like a tesla is a good 30% heavier than it's ICE equivalent, with boats and planes that's a lot to design around.

“What would happen if the boat sank from its weight, and you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?”

An electric speedboat or jet ski would be great. No more problems with outboards not wanting to start after Winter storage and no gas to worry about.

I know you're interested in electric vehicles, have you looked at the Incat Hull 906, a 40 MWh ferry being built in Australia right now? It will be the biggest electric vehicle ever built and can carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. Will be put into service between Buenos Aires and a port in Uruguay.

(Just checked and it was launched early in May although not ready for service yet)

Whoever said "Water and electricity don't mix" never heard of an electric water heater.
When both the water and electricity are contained there would have to be 2 failures instead of one. And my family jewels are never going to be riding a hot water heater :)

The way EV chargers work is everything has to be perfect or there is no high voltage.

The first thing that happens when you connect up an EV DCFC is a ~15 second initiation process where everything is checked. The charge can only start when there is communication that everything possible is perfect. Initiation failures are common, perhaps the main reason for chargers NOT working. The communication between the charger and vehicle must prove no ground faults, insulation faults or other issues before there is any HV. That includes any problem in the charger itself. The DCFCs run a complicated program and everything about it is checked before it will allow any voltage. And even then, must remain perfect or the charger shuts down instantly.

There is ZERO voltage when you connect the EV to a charger. Same for when you disconnect. It is locked in until you tell it to stop first before you can remove the charging plug.

Duffy Electric Boats have been in the So. Cal. harbors since 1970.. They have a pretty big rental fleet, besides sales...

We have some lakes here that are going to have to modify their rules, some have signs posted "electric motors only" and were originally intended to mean trolling motors.
