Hi to all,    I read where Ned had a problem with his refrigerator (dometic) and replaced the cooling unit with an Amish made one. (hoping ned will see this and respond, but I will listen to all your suggestions so please respond). Well, I got that same ammonia smell in my unit (model rm2410) and I'm wondering what to do. I did follow his link and found remanufactured cooling unit for only 485.00 with a good warranty. I also read where some of you replaced the whole thing and put in a residential frig from like a home depot. I know that if I do that it's cheaper but I can only use electric. I think it would be nice to continue to use the gas or electric if I can afford it. A whole new unit is 1,000.00 plus. what do you guys think of remanufactured cooling units? Ned, what do you think? You replaced yours in 12/13 you said, hows it going?  love to hear from you guys, I have a class B home and am new at all this.  Craig (craigsbus@2)

http://www.rvfridgestore.com/dometic-rm2400.html      $400 exchange here

http://www.rvpartscountry.com/Dometic-4-Cubic-Ft-RM-2410-Compact-Refrigerator.html    $724 for complete new fridge

http://www.adventurerv.net/dometic-24102-2way-compact-refrigerator-pi-14677.html?osCsid=t7rb9blj9u1n32tb7m2c45bov1  50$ cheaper here

so no point in having a cooling unit put in a little fridge  at $400 plus labour etc etc when u can buy a complete new unit for  $680
basically a no brainer to just buy a new one

Craig, we've been very happy with the Amish cooling unit.  It's worked flawlessly since installation.  We had the ARP Control installed at the same time to avoid any overheating problems with it.  The key to a good working refrigerator is the installation of the replacement cooling unit.  A poor installation will result in poor cooling.  Ours was done properly so we don't expect to have any problems for many years.  The replacement cools better than the original ever did.  Of course, the original one lasted for 17 years :)

You may have a problem finding a residential model to fit in your class B.

A couple of notes.

Many here have replaced just the cooling part with the new or remanufactured part. They seem satisfied with the results.

The boat type (two way) small refrigerators do not work out well for RV. Small and, if 12V, very power hungry.

Standard household refrigerators work well and are becoming original equipment on many new MH's. Be aware that you will also need an inverter (about 1, 200W) and suitable batteries to run it when you have no other source of 120 Vac.

I would NOT buy a remanufactured cooling unit, but I would buy a new replacement cooling unit (which is what Ned did).  I think the aftermarket replacements, e.g. the "Amish" unit from RV Cooling Unit Warehouse, are as good or better than OEM and less money too.

Like I said I would not just buy a cooling unit period !!for this dinky little fridge when a brand new unit is only 250$ more than just the cooling unit alone never mind labour etc to change the cooling unit
