Looks like Reno is in a valley? Are the tall buildings casinos?

Were you ever lucky at a casino?

Who works at casinos? Whites, blacks, mexicans chinese, migrant workers or native american indians?
NV has endless mountain ranges. I think we can get a 360° view of mountains from every city in Nevada. So yeah, Reno is mostly in a valley. But I am at the very top of a 5K elevation hill, but Reno's average elevation is 4,500'.

Yes, all those tall buildings are casinos with their hotels.

I used to gamble, but not for many years. Even once there in Maryland! I think it was the Rocky Gap in Cumberland.

I've been both lucky and unlucky at casinos, as are most people, mostly unlucky of course. But I have not gambled for more than 15 or so years. Gambling is for suckers, IMAO. IOW, I used to be a sucker, but not anymore.

The casino workers here in Reno can be anybody, Male, female, any race, etc. Just the normal mix.

Do people end up staying in these areas and setting up squatters rights?
No, definitely not in the LTVA itself, as those areas are federally managed and the permit needed to camp there has a 7-month stay limit. The rangers eventually get to know most of the folks who use that area as winterbirds by sight since they see them much more frequently, but they do a pretty good job of monitoring who is using the dump station, the potable water fill stations and the dumpsters for transients.

Each time I went up there to any of those facilities I was always walked up on by one of the rangers and asked to show them my permit sticker which gave me privilges of use. They will usually warn you once and then if it occurs again you'll get ticketed, as there are those who try staying without paying for the privilege pretty much every week.

Cool.
I don't gamble......Too cheap....Hubby plays the lottery when it gets to half a Billion. I always beg for a winner to show up fast when it gets that high! hahhaha

It is soon time here to get back in camping/travel mode .extreme cold should be done here in Maryland now.

Time to dewinterise and take stuff back out to the bus and get ready to see something that is more interesting than the grocery store. hahahhaha

A small but apparently growing number apparently try, despite the scorching summer temperatures. The proposed LTVA fee increases for next year address this by drastically increasing the price for the 7 month winter permit from $180 to $600 covering Sept 15-April 15 and adding a $20 a night charge during the rest of the year. You can stay as long as you want as log as you pay these fees.

BLM land that is not part of an LTVA limit stays to 14 days without charge, then you have to move a certain distance, usually 25 miles away, to continue staying on federal land. A few people abuse this, cycling between the national forests around Flagstaff for the summer and staying in one area longer than they should, then returning to Quartzsite in the winter. This is making the Forest Service ban all camping on the abused areas.

Maybe that is why they closed the dispersed camping areas south of flagstaff for 10 yrs

That LTVA will still fill up with better than 300 campers as it does every year, because even at $600 for the permit it works out to less than $2.85/day for the entire season.

When we've been out there is was on the $75 annual permit which as you correctly stated only allows 14 consecutive days and nights, after which you are suppose to move at least 25 miles away for one day and night prior to returning. And as I said, we did see some who were defintely abusing that rule.

But so long as they were not staying past their 14-day limit in the prime camping spots along the shoreline or nearer to the water, nobody was too concerned about reporting them to the rangers posted up at the LTVA.

We observed one elderly gentleman who had set up a schoolie somewhat off the beaten path and away from water in prior to Thanksgiving in 2023. When we returned there for the 1st two weeks of February of 2024 he was still there and it was obvious he had not moved off and returned as he was supposed to do.

You bet. People like Bob Wells and his Cheap RV Living and HOWA deserve much of the blame by encouraging people on fixed incomes to buy a van, stop paying rent and live free or cheaply on public lands.

The $75 annual permit is to stay on Arizona State lands. These are completely separate from the LTVAs, which along with the BLM and National Forest 14 day dispersed camping areas are on Federal land.

How much will a half billion bucks change your life?

I don't think I would even want it. If I had it, I would do my best to forget that I did.

I once had a conversation with a scrapyard manager near our transmitter site who was being sued by the county for several million dollars. He said the effect was like falling off of a tower - after the first few feet the extra distance is irrelevant.

Yeah, what's the difference if they sue him for millions or billions? Unless his name is Elon Musk!

IMO, if you break even, that is lucky!

True. I did win sizeable sum in Vegas once playing blackjack for a few hours and I thought it was pretty lucky. Certainly didn't have anything to do with my blackjack skills!

When people tell me how much they won, I say it doesn't count unless you're counting for the year. Much like the way the IRS does it.

Also, when people tell me how much they won, I figure their loses over the year are several times that amount.

Casinos are not in business to give money away.

Was only there for a few days on business and haven't been back so didn't have any losses after that. Made out pretty well. Uncle Sam did take his cut tho and that accounted for the biggest hit on the winnings!

Beats me. Hubby wants to find out though. hahaha

It would be fun to hire a bunch of people to drive us, and around us on the highway,

so people don't run us over from the rear, or left and fly around us on the right in the breakdown lane while holding a cell phone and drinking a cocktail and a joint in the ashtray,

in a car with a muffler dragging on the ground and making sparks.

Or any of the other scary parts of highway travel.
Oh well.......... Tee Hee

It's all a part of the trip.

Have you ever been car jacked out there?

It seems to be a profession for young people in Baltimore these days. Glad I don't live in that part of Maryland.

Spring will soon be here. March 20th. 5:01 am eastern time
