Weather super yesterday afternoon so headed to a Fish in Neighborhood lake, Ky. stocks their FIN lakes with trout and catfish several times during the year. Caught 6 trout. Had 4 get off hook at the bank, trout go bonkers when they see the bank coming up. Now i have a nice dinner coming.

Too cold for me to fish here. We have a lake in the middle of town about 5 minutes drive for me. In good weather the park is teaming with folks fishing, picnicking and just strolling. I use a cane pole with a bobber and worms from the yard. We take the grandkids and the dog with a picnic and I can catch 20-30 stump knockers with my cane pole. I catch and release. Fun days.

lucky you, I can dig up half of my garden and find 2 or 3 worms. good thing Wallytworld sells them.
finally sent off a soil sample and it determined that my PH is way high. don't know if that's the reason for low worm count or all the UPS jets that fly directly over my garden taking off ???

When I was a kid the night before we went fishing we'd lay a small tarp on the grass out in the back yard. In the morning we'd lift it up and a bunch of large night crawler worms would be crawling around. Never any problem getting worms!

We used chunks of plywood and scrap 2x4s, turned over rocks. If you ran out of worms you could chase down a grasshopper. If really desperate, small perch would bite a shiny empty hook.

I wish more states allowed out-of-state seniors a couple days free fishing, I would definitely take advantage.

haven't seen a grass hopper around here for years either.
I remember fishing in the Delaware River 29 miles north of Philly back in 1958 when what they called white perch that run up the river in spring, they would bite on a bare gold hook. if you had 5 hooks you would have 5 fish.

never was anywhere near that Schuylkill. we lived 2 blocks from the Delaware river and after my papers were delivered it was mostly fishing. they had plenty of floating docks and the best was at a local Yacht club. would get run off if members were there.
saw a lot of multi colored polluted waters being run out into the river through big pipes on the NJ side but we ate the fish anyhow.

I grew up in the king of prussia area. Stopped eating local fish when i started reading the book they gave you when you bought a fishing license.

The schuylkill was bad but always seemed the delaware was worse

We used to get run off our favorite swimming spots too lol

that's terrible. bad enough trying to rid it of earlier environmental pollution much less keep up the same mistakes of the past.
It is terrible but far from the worst cases. The schuylkill did catch on fire once but other rivers in the US had it worse.

When you know the real history of food, water, and pollution in the US you realize that food and water safety are usually not high on the priority list.

I used to work sometimes at the point breeze refinery lol. By that point it had changrd hands a number of times and was part of a bigger refinery complex and there was a lot of cleanup done. There were still byildings there that were condemned because of the pollution

You can get a I week non resident in La. for $35.00. If you hold up your right hand and swear you've not read a non-fiction book since middle school and never intend to, you can get a one week resident for $5.00.

Just after I graduated HS, 1969, I bought a dirt bike. I would wind some fishing line around my hand with a hook and sinker attached and take off for the woods. Back in the woods down the logging roads were a few little streams. I would catch those little black crickets and fish till almost dark. Often came home with a good stringer full of perch. Made my grandma happy. She was happier when I brought home a few squirrels. That required taking the shotgun though. She would boil the skulls and eat the brains.

I've never done the hand line fishing, I have a hard enough time with rod and reel sometimes.

I've eaten hog brains scrambled with eggs but no squirrel ones.
lots of old guys I worked with preferred the squirrel brains over the pig's
I don't eat those anymore because of all the diseases out now. just not worth the risks.

I was pretty young when I did that handling fishing. Just 18. Yeah, my grandma was old school. She and my grandpa were sharecroppers in Dothan, AL. She lived with us up until I was about 20 maybe. She always had a dip of snuff in her lip and it didn’t matter what we had for dinner she had to have pan fried cornbread. She’s the one ate the brains, not me. I ate a lot of stuff growing up in Florida; soft shell turtle, armadillo, gator, bear, just about anything except deer. Couldn’t stand the taste of it.
