I am looking for an easy way to transfer large files over the Internet.

My immediate issue is a friend of mine who just found out about the Beethoven Symphonies, but missed the first five.

I tried sending a file via his normal email.  To test it I sent a copy to myself.  I got my own copy fine via the escapee address, but his service limits him to 20 meg files.

Then I encourage him to download and install MSFT Instant Messenger.  I believe we ran into router security problems there on our LANs.  Rather than wrestle with this router issue, I would prefer to first see if there is a SIMPLE way for two people to exchange large files over the net.  How about AOL Messenger?  Or one of the other Messengers?

Are there any other SIMPLE techniques to consider?

p.s. doubt if the Supreme Court or record companies are interested anyways in little ole me and the rare times I might share.

I do admit I just saw for the first time this message at the bottom of the BBC web page:

"You may not copy, reproduce, edit, adapt, alter, republish, post, broadcast, transmit, make available to the public, or otherwise use this audio in any way except for your own personal, non-commercial use."

Sort of an ambiguous statement when you add in the final phrase "except for your own personal, non-commercial use".? Sharing with one other personal friend is not exactly "public".?

At any rate, had I seen that I would not have shared.? I had assumed they were making it all public domain.? Sort of inconsistent to post it on a worldwide web, then not let you send a copy of the first 5 symphonies to a personal friend who just found out about it.? All of this copyright stuff is way too paranoid, IMO.? ?

I personally find it very easy to figure out where to draw the line.? Copying for resale, posting mass copies on the web, are all easy example of unfair practices that should indeed make media companies sweat.?
Making a copy for you own personal backup after you purchased the original, or even giving to one or two personal friends, especially material originally made public, is kind of silly to worry about.?

We have a good test environment, regarding the many years that audio taping has been allowed.? Certainly has not slowed down the media business.? At the time analog audio recording was considered state of the art, for that day and age.? And yet the media companies continued to blossom

While digital copies are more accurate, there is very little difference to the "average" ear.? I have often made analog copies on the net or on the air music, using something like total recorder and transformed them from analog back into mp3.? Skipping the analog step and staying all digital appears to be the only area the media companies are protesting, and if I want a pure digital copy, it is easier to buy it.? Which I do all the time.

I truly think a lot of people have lost their perspective in this area.? Just my personal opinion.

burn a cd & mail it.

for sharing photos etc, set up a web site.  My son did mine for me (do you know a teenager?) but your isp may make one available.  Earthlink for example:

There are a number of ISPs that offer very inexpensive web hosting.  GoDaddy is one of the largest and also one of the cheapest starting at $3.95/month.  Another inexpensive host is 1and1.  You can register your own domain (like my nedreiter.com) for <$10/year and have use it for your web site and email.  One advantage of owning your own domain is you can have your own email addresses and are not dependent on any ISP.  You can change ISPs at any time while your email addresses stay the same.

The other way is to set up a secure computer-computer connection  but I haven't a clue as to how

Have you tried a free file transfer website called SendThisFile.com?  It is simple to use and I have had no problems with it.  Connie
