Flat Towing a Used Chevrolet Equinox

Thread Summary

Original Member Title: Anyone tow a Chevrolet Eqinox?
This AI-generated summary may contain inaccuracies. Please refer to the full thread for complete details.
The original poster is considering a used Chevrolet Equinox as a towed vehicle behind a motorhome and asked which years or configurations are suitable for flat towing. Members clarified that the question was about towing an Equinox, not towing with one, and several emphasized checking the specific owner’s manual because towability varies by year, drivetrain, and procedure.

Several members reported towing 2013 or 2014 Equinox models successfully, but early comments conflicted over whether...

Looking to possibly purchase a used Equinox as a possible tow vehicle. Just starting to learn about suitability and seeing that it can work with certain limitations with respect to year, model etc. Figured any input I could get here would be much more useful than anything ChatGPT could tell me. ;)

We tow a 2014 Equinox with no problems. You have to get an AWD only, FWD not towable.
Turn key on, put transmission in Neutral, turn key to acc and you're ready to go

Ok...we need some clarification here. The title of the thread suggests the question is about towing an Equinox where the OP seems to be asking about towing WITH an Equinox.

I don't read it that way at all. The OP posted in the Motorhome section and I doubt if he is planning on towing a motorhome with an Equinox. :ROFLMAO:

Thank you! Bunch of trouble makers we have here trying to parse my words. :ROFLMAO: ;):scratchhead:

I stand by my perfectly clear initial post! "Looking to possibly purchase a used Equinox as a possible tow vehicle."

I mean, c'mon-- this is after all the Motorhome section of an RV forum not a section in a U-Haul support forum!

Good info-- thanks for the input. Do you happen to know what years/models are towable?

The Chevrolet Equinox has been one of the more RV-friendly compact SUVs over the years, but not every drivetrain and model year is flat towable (“dinghy towable”) behind a motorhome.

Common advice and obvious thing to do is check the owner's manual, but even there I've read some conflicting experiences from actual users. For example, the manual in our current Honda says "NO" but after discussions with a number of owners who do tow theirs, we've had no issues.

AI has similar disclaimers:

Model YearsFlat Towable?Notes
2010–2017Yes (most automatic models)These are commonly used as toads behind RVs. Follow GM’s recreational towing procedure exactly.
2018–2024YesThe redesigned Equinox continued to allow flat towing on many configurations.
2025–2026Unclear / verify carefullyGM changed the Equinox significantly. Some newer trims/drivetrains may no longer be approved. Verify in the owner’s manual before buying.

After a re-read or two I knew what you meant, from the context, but I had the same initial reaction to that post as some of the others, but the confusion of context vs statement worked in your favor. But keep in mind that "tow vehicle" and "towed vehicle" are two entirely different things, thus replacing "tow" with "towed" or with "toad" would have made your intent immediately obvious to everyone. So I can't call your post "perfectly clear" but I will say it's not too difficult to figure out your meaning after a few moments of thought.

I knew exactly what you meant along with 99.9999% of the members here. I was just trying to throw a little humor in your post. If I’m a trouble maker, oh well.

Well, I dunno. When I see the words "Tow Vehicle" I think "a vehicle that can tow something."

Though on reading the Thread Title, and Jymbee's post, I did, rather quickly intuit his meaning, as well as deducing that Renee was kind'a being a Smart Alec.
As Wavy Gravy has oft been quoted, "If you lose your sense of humor, It's just not funny anymore."

Yep, your humor was obvious. Got a chuckle out of me! (y)

People are giving you INCORRECT info. YES!!! You can tow your 2014 Equinox 4 wheels down. Comments here have it backwards. You can tow FWD NOT AWD. I have been flat towing my FWD 2013 Equinox since new. Google it, there is a fuse you have to pull stop battery drain. Discrete Logic Ignition (DLIS) fuse. Consult the "Vehicle Care" section of the owner's manual to identify the specific fuse location for the engine type (4-cylinder or V6)

Well, I've been towing my AWD 2014 Equinox for the past 5 years with no problems and the owners manual states both FWD and AWD can be towed 4 down , page 10-70 in the manual.

We bought a new 2024 Equinox and towed it for more than a year until it wouldn’t start towards the end of a trip in 2025. Two dealers never found out what caused the problem but we were told the different computers in it stopped talking to each other. They replaced part after part for over 3.5 months and finally got it started except the check engine wouldn’t go off. GM finally bought it back from us under our state’s lemon law. The next year, Equinox model cars can no longer be flat towed. It was a nice car except the heater and A/C was weak. We went out and bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We are done with GM cars and can’t recommend them for towing.

Yikes, what a frustrating pain that must have been.

Can't say as I blame you after that experience!

Grand Cherokees are on my list to look at as well. Safe to say your Jeep has worked out well for you?

So far it’s been working out very well. No issues towing it. What still bothers me is the dealer we originally bought it from never offered us a loaner car (we asked for one too) so we were forced to buy a car while our Equinox sat at the dealer. Communication between the dealer and GM was really poor. Their engineers couldn’t figure out what was going on with our car. We eventually got our money back but it was a very frustrating and stressful time.
